Noh Cheon Woong
Solo Exhibition
2020. 3. 11 ~ 17
GALLERYDOS, Seoul, Korea
This work of art was drawn with my eyes closed.
"Anti-Focus" is my main concept.
Painting in Darkness
Noh Cheon-woong has painted in darkness since 2008 because he did not want to be controlled by his technical skills deeply ingrained in his body. Darkness prevents him not to be able to paint something beautiful by not giving a chance for him to judge a procedure of his painting from the memories of the beauty learned as a painter. After all, some viewers may feel kind of confused and uncomfortable when they look at his works of art at first sight. That is because his works refuse the viewers to focus on a certain point.
His blinded and sometimes not fully functional eyes in darkness make several irregular lines on a canvas, which naturally lead the images that is hard for the viewer to focus on a particular part. He gives us the experience to have the activity of sense of peripheral vision through the chaos he made, hoping we remove all kinds of prejudices. He also shows us how to share the energy of our lives through a fluorescent-colored background.
Mark Toby and Jackson Pollock, abstract expressionist artists, were very obsessed in different ways. Toby was clinging to Asian calligraphy, and Pollock to a psychological state of human beings. As a result, they naturally created a truly fascinating work of art, but Noh’s work shows us another obsession: "not obsessing." We all have a standard pattern about what art should be and an obsessive definition of the beauty of art. But if we look into and try to understand Noh's "Anti-focus" concept, we would find a new joy of contemporary art.
