New nanotech to detect cancer early | Joshua Smith

What if every home had an early-warning cancer detection system? Researcher Joshua Smith is developing a nanobiotechnology "cancer alarm" that scans for traces of disease in the form of special biomarkers called exosomes. In this forward-thinking talk, he shares his dream for how we might revolutionize cancer detection and, ultimately, save lives.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.

This is one of the best Ted talks I have heard in a while. Early detection will save lives and limit stress. Thank you Joshua Smith for your story and for giving hope to the present and future. Looking forward to hearing more from you in the days to come.

This is my dream as well. I'm glad to see someone striving for it. Imagine if you could have life saving tests like this done every day in your own bathroom. With some sort of smart mirror working as an interface displaying results and recommendations.

I really want to thank Mr. Smith for the work he is doing to diagnose Cancer at the early stages. I can like Mr. Smith feel how cancer is emotionally draining, since, my mother had to suffer it twice. Thank god, that my mother is doing fine now.

PS: It would be really great if I could talk to Mr. Smith.

What aspect of the current technology is missing, that it will still take a decade to complete this development?

This ted-talk sounded like an elevator pitch for funding, as so many details were left out it's impossible to conclude whether or not
1. exosomes can be adequately separated by size from urine
2. relevant biomarkers are present and detectable
3. Detection limit is low enough for early-stage diagnosis.

I really hope this becomes a reality soon.

This makes me mad because people in the comments are talking about bullshit when it's a serious matter I know quite a few people that have or died of cancer and would really like to see them find a cure or atleast prevent it from happening

instead of spending a huge portion for our federal budget of DOD spending, let's at least allocate 0.05% of it on research.
