Xacuti or Xacutti (Konkani: शागोती) is a curry prepared in Goa, India, with complex spicing, including white poppy seeds, grated coconut and large dried red chilies.
Most people know that Chicken Xacuti is actually pronounced as shakuti. Its a unique dish that consists of Poppy seeds and Kashmiri Chillies. The pronunciation “Shakuti” is most probably derived from the word “Chacuti” which is Portuguese, although the Portuguese Chacuti is brownish in colour as compared to the red Goan Xacuti.

Ingredients

chicken: 1 kilogram

Marination paste
cloves of garlic 10
Ginger 2- 3 inch
bunch coriander leaves 1/2
green chillies 2

Marination
Salt to taste
Lemon Juice: 30 ml

Masala Mix Number 1

Tumeric powder 1 teaspoon
grated coconut 2 cup
Sliced onion 500 gms

Masala Mix Number 2
dried red chilies Baydagi :25gms
cinnamon : 3inch
cardamons 4pc
Black cardamons 2pc
nutmeg 1/4 inch
coriander seeds 25gms
fennel (saunf) 2tsp
poppy seeds (kuskus) 10 gms
Black pepper 20pc
Clove 10pc

Finishing

Chopped Tomato 200 gms
Chopped large onions 500 gms
ghee 2 tablespoon
oil 4 tablespoon

Optional
Coconut milk 200ml

Preparation

Clean chicken and cut into small pieces. Apply salt and Lemon. Grind ginger, garlic, coriander leaves and green chillies into a fine paste. Then apply to the chicken and keep it aside.

In a frying pan put 2 tbsp oil, toss all the spices and keep them aside to cool.

In the same frying pan put 2 tbsp oil, add sliced onions and heat till soft then add grated coconut along and roast till brown for approximately 15 minutes. Then add turmeric and get it off the heat.

Then grind all the spices and then add the coconut & onion mixture and blend it to a fine paste.

Take a large pan, melt ghee, fry onions till tender.
Add marinated chicken, and cook on high heat for 10 minutes or till the water starts to evaporate.

Mix spice coconut paste into the meat and Cook for 5 minutes.

Stir and cook for further 15 minutes till chicken is cooked and the desired gravy consistency is achieved Ones the curry starts boiling, add the coconut milk.

Serve hot with some Polo, bread or rice.

Note: This curry has the distinction of being one of those dishes that tastes better as next morning’s breakfast. When reheated, the Xacuti gravy thickens to a point that it further enhances the flavours. Plain or topped with an egg, you can scrape it out using hot poi or bread.
