As you age, the stairs become challenging. We have remodeled it throughout the yrs. As you come up the stairs, we changed the half wall to an open red oak shadowbox. It is beautiful & practical. (My husband is a woodworker.) We opened up the dining room & kitchen & my husband custom built a maple/walnut kitchen with shaker style cabinetry. We have 3 decks, so plenty of entertainment area. I feel we've had plenty of room to raise 2 kids. We seldom utilize the downstairs. The perks are your plumbing is in one spot, so leaks are easy to control. The cons, it's 14 stairs into the house no matter how you come in to go upstairs. Laundry is downstairs.

So... In NJ we have tons of 50's - 70's split-level and Bi-level homes. If you walk through the front door and are presented with a landing with stairs up and down... that is a Bi-level. A split level usually is 3 separate levels You walk into the main living area with stair leading up or down on your left or right.

Just bought an 80's split level and it doesn't sound like how he described other than that we do have the split foyer he talks about. I would not call our home a starter home. This home is actually bigger than our starter home 60's ranch we moved out of. We upgraded from the other home gaining a much larger master bedroom, a dining room, a more spacious kitchen, a fourth bedroom, and our favorite is the three season room off the kitchen. Our garage is on the side so not taking up basement/lower level space. The garage is also quite spacious as it's a two and a half garage with high ceiling space for storage/loft options. Also, our home is not a cookie cutter of the neighborhood like he showed. We live in a neighborhood where everyone has big 1 acres lots and the homes are all different looking from one another. In our neighborhood there are split levels from the 70's, ranch styles and two story homes. The con he didn't mention is that the split foyer may not be a good home once a person enters their senior years. It may also not be a good home for baby, toddlers as you would have to worry about them falling on the stairs. We are in our early 40's and have two kids age 11 and almost 9. So for us the stairs are fine. We just have to think about our parents visiting as they age. Buying a house built in the 80's has a con of carpeting in the living room and dining room and stairs. Ours looks clean and decent but I miss our hardwood floors from our little ranch. So someday we plan to add wood flooring.

Oh Miss Gray., your home is so warm, gracious, lovely and natural — just like you. What a comforting space to have been in for so many years. Thank you for sharing this with us. I truly hope where you are going you will equally love as much. Have followed you and your career for so many years and we always have loved your work. SueEllen is simply my favorite TV character of all time. We are all wishing you much joy on your next chapter. ❤️🙂

I have a split in NJ. I have a front entry/mudroom, you walk up 4 stairs to the living room, around the corner is the kitchen, downstairs by kitchen 4 steps down is the office) kids computer room, same floor is 1)2 bathroom and laundry, walk out sliding doors to patio. Down 7 flights stairs finished basement, the kids use to play video games, sofa and all! Upstairs are three bedrooms and bathroom with tub. The downside it has no central AC however we are working on that. We are also going to extend both floors. I live my split. We sold a bigger home previously and it had lots of exterior stairs to get to the front door. So all is not true for every split...make it your own and enjoy!

Cool video.. I agree with a lot of it. I own a bi level (split) in NJ. Mine DOES have a walk out basement to the backyard which we love. I only have a single garage, but is connected to the side of the lower level.. so it doesn’t take up any of living space downstairs which is nice. So our bi level is 3 bedrooms upstairs, one bedroom downstairs and an office space. 2 full bathrooms .. I’d like to add powder room eventually

I love my split level with 5 steps up and 5 steps down, picture windows, garage, breezeway and back patio, I don't like the laundry room.

That is a split-entry home. A true split-level house doesn't give the up/down choice right when you open the door.

As a kid I always found it weird that every single house on the block was completely different also my friend lived in a split level house but it was in the same neighborhood so the house next to it was completely different looking.

Also I don't know what he means by dragging the groceries up two flights of stairs because my friends front door is on ground level so you only have to go up one flight to get to the kitchen. Also I don't know exactly what a flight of stairs is like how many stairs do there have to be for it to count as a flight? Going into the basement I'd say half a flight of stairs because the basement is only halfway underground.

Our split level has a detached garage. So the basement was the size of the upstairs.

Is it possible to remodel a split-level for my family member unable to climb stairs?

I love our split level, but it was built in the 60’s and all the houses on the block look completely different. Huge 2 car garage, the basement is 800 sq ft, there’s back yard access from the the basement, and grocery wise I just carry them up through the front door not through the garage and up the steps. I agree though that if it was a small split level cookie cutter home I would hate it.

So... a split level around here is still $1 million. There goes all the pro's out the window!
