I honestly prefer this, growing up in the 2000's and seeing how ridiculous movie star culture could get, I'm glad we're focusing less on it, unless directors just become the same way lol

You’re so right! I have directors on my film scrapbooking wall but not actors 😂 I’m totally going to cinemas for certain directors, no questions asked.

Some day writers will be the movie stars. Some day

Completely agree! I'm a high school student and all my friends know all the big filmmakers.

Cruise is arguably the last movie star still active from before studios switched from the star-driven approach to the IP-driven approach in the late 2000s but from that era we do still have Denzel (EQ3 last year), Costner (Horizon coming this year), Stallone (Cliffhanger 2 this year), Keanu (Constantine 2 is now in production), DiCaprio (Scorsese's Roosevelt next year), Crowe (Sleeping Dogs and the upcoming Georgetown Project being produced by Miramax) and the ultimate Ocean's reunion of Clooney and Pitt in Wolfs later this year all doing original, star-driven movies due to the clout they still carry with them from before that transitional period.

Dude I had never heard of your channel and stumbled unto this video by chance and this is amazing! You're clear, well edited, has a nice voice to listen to short and on the nose and really entertaining to watch!

I believe that these auteur-driven blockbusters of the 2020's are to movies what Nirvana was to rock music in the 1990's: they're more thoughtful, mature, well-crafted alternatives to the noisy, loud, and vapid spectacle of superheroes and mega-IP's/hair metal, yet became so popular they wound up being the mainstream.

In the last 3 years or so, we've seen movies like Dune, Top Gun 2, Avatar 2, RRR, EEAAO, Barbie, and Oppenheimer blow up and become the defining movies of their time, while denting the popularity of Marvel and their blockbuster peers. We know way more about people like Chris Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Greta Gerwig, the Daniels, and SS Rajamouli than we ever did about Jon Watts or the Russos.

With the slow decline of Marvel, it feels like audiences are slowly getting an interest in the voices that are telling them the stories they consume, feels like people want to watch something that wasn't written by a committee or studio, but by artists and craftspeople just making movies, even if those films are poor, it's still refreshing to see a filmmakers vision try and fail instead of people just blaming another "Kevin Feige" or "Kathleen Kennedy", with this though I do still think the idea of "The Movie Star" is alive and well proven by the multitudes of fan accounts you can find for the multitudes of actors out there, they aren't perceived in the same "Untouchable" way but I do belive that people watch certain films because of the cast.

I think this is an interesting observation. I go to see things for the actors, but I'm now more aware of who the directors are whereas in the past I never payed attention

Vertigo, Bugs Bunny, Jaws, and Star Wars… That’s a cool collection of posters you have in the background

It’s worth mentioning how much the writers strike played a part in this. With no actors to promote their films, we had people like Nolan, Scorsese, gerwig and others being the main people to promote their films.

It happend before look at Nouvelle Vague. Great catch tho, I think lots of people don’t think about it the same way, but its true.

i dont really feel theres been any shift at all. If youre into movies a lot, you've always been aware of directors (the bigger and smaller ones in terms of careers, indie or not). The less casual will be interested by what is easily in front of the camera. There have always been big name directors pushed in front of movies (M. Night Shyamalan was another example)
The whole "movie stars are gone" narrative is really just because the entertainment landscape is much more fragmented and reaches across different venues (so many streaming services competing) as opposed to what originally was as basic as "what is in theatres vs what is playing on TV channels". This has changed the way movies are marketed as they compete for different forms of entertainment

I had this conversation with friends when "Next Goal Wins" came out. I was willing to pay 40$ for a ticket, popcorn and a drink JUST to see a new Taika Waititi film. I couldn't care less who was in the movie, I just knew Taika's style of writing, directing, and acting is so special. As soon as I hear rumblings of a movie coming from Taika, I will genuinely make a note of it SOMEWHERE, to make sure I'm free when it releases.

Denzel might be the last real movie star then. If he’s in a movie. That movie immediately rises to the next level

Always felt it should be this way. Actors show up for a few weeks to a couple months and do what they’re told (mostly). The director is arguably the most important creative mind involved and they spend years working on the film.
