It's sad that they are not available anymore, back then I was a child and unable to pay for digital games, but I still have my Xperia Play and I'd gladly buy most of them now.

I just got this phone last week. It's really worth it. Playing Dead Space and Asphalt 6 (They're both free!) on this phone in HD is just beautiful. Not to mention it can emulate PS1 games (I'm playing FF9 on mine atm) and Sony plans to bring converted PSP titles like GoW, LBP and Tekken to the PSSuite later on. Seriously worth it.

this phone needs a comeback (a theory is that they were afraid it would cannibalize sales on psvita and os4 at the time so they halted development)

Sorry to hear about your issue. If you experience problems with downloading the game please restart your WiFi and your device. Then uninstall the game and try to redownload it.
