One theory is The Nickelback was so good at reading popular trends and then capitalizing on them to consistently have hit songs and then that caused them to be played on the radio excessively which eventually made people loop around to being annoyed. And after that it just kind of became a meme and people were afraid to come out as liking Nickelback because they might be made fun of.

Although I am not a big fan of Nickleback I never understand why so many hated them when there is dozens of bands just like them who do not get anywhere close to the same amount of hate! I think it started more as a joke against radio friendly rock bands and Nickleback was the main band in the line of fire!

Well the whole thing with Nickelback I think was their sound a little bit, and I also think a lot of it had to do with just their popularity. I mean you have to imagine kind of the late '90s early 2000s Nickelback songs were everywhere. You couldn't turn on the TV or go to the movies or Go to a grocery store or anything without hearing a Nickelback song. And I guess maybe people thought that they like sold out or something you know like corporate rock or whatever. They were one of the first Rock bands I listened to way back 17 years ago. And then some douchbag decided they suck and all of the sudden I was ashamed to say I like Nickleback. There was always something like that. I remember back in the late 90's and early 2000's we were all skating on roller blades and then some asshole said rollerblading was gay, and bam over night there where trash bins full of roller blades. It's dumb, but it proves that no matter how much we claim we don't give a shit about opinions of others we bend really easy to trends and public opinions. I'd be willing to bet you anything that there will come a day when people start shitting on things that are currently popular and everyone will start acting like they've never done it.
