One of my English teacher's said, I was the most serious person, she had ever seen and asked if, I was alright. I assured her that, I was. I told her, I do not smile much unless it is with close friends or people, I am comfortable with. Plus, I have met plenty of people that looked happy but were not. I never did like that in a lot of western cultures forcing a smile. Also, I just tell people, I am half Ukrainian and Polish it is in my nature too not smile.

A friend of mine came up with a skit some years ago where a Finnish man gets on national TV for being able to smile. When the journalists show up to his house, he calls his wife and kids and they prop up the sides of his cheeks into a smile. In another skit, the same guy hears a genuinely funny joke for the first time, his mouth flickers into a smile, and he collapses in pain 😂

I think genetically the colder of a climate you lived in, the more serious you are because if you're not, you and everyone you love will die. But in warmer climates, people are much more jovial and happy go lucky because food just grows on trees and you just start a little fire if it gets below 60 degrees at night.

I got all excited to watch a Finnish film on Swedish TV but it was depressing. People didn't talk much. Sometimes for several minutes and no-one was smiling the WHOLE length of the film! I was getting a bit frustrated wondering what kind of country could be so depressing!

Being from Latvia - I don't smile outside, since the harsh reality does not give a reason for that, because all we see is: grey sky for half a year, week long rains, 600 euro wage, 1, 92 euro per liter of diesel, 30 cents per kilowatt/hour of electricity, one hospital for 800.000 population of capital city Rīga and a military callout in the middle of all this.

There is no point in smiling for Finnish people. I mean with a personal space of half a kilometer, nobody would even see it anyway, unless they are invading said personal space - and then they would feel too uncomfortable to smile.
