This week we are starting a new series on Classic Traveller. Much like the deep dive basic fantasy series, this one is going to be all about Classic Traveller. It is probably one of the best, if not the best, scifi rpg ever made.

I've recently discovered a love for CT (I have the '77 LBBs and the facsimile version). I love the character creation; you play the role given. Also, that tension of pushing your luck with a cool character who has survived 3 or 4 terms and risking death for a few extra skills or bennys, is great.

I only have experience with the Mongoose 2E edition so I'm looking to learning more about classic Traveller.

Great dive into CT. It's such a great game but requires the players and referee to have long term sense of adventure that's not based on progression. It's something all the D&D line relies on so heavily that new players have trouble getting engaged. Once hooked, CT is absolutely incredible for hard science fiction.

Awesome man i love your videos, i play a mix of traveller and ironsworn starforged so i can play solo games, but when our gaming group gets together they are so torn between call of cthulhu and traveller we almost always end up doing some really nasty cosmic horror. Traveller has so many awesome already made star systems for ideas and monsters well no better game than cthulhu to bring some nasties.

I don't understand why your character didn't try for another career after s/he mustered out from the army. Or is that a Mongoose rule?

Hey John!
Just stumbled across your videos.
Growing up with classic D&D, Traveller, and tons of other games like Call Of Cthulhu and Twilight 2000, it's nice to see someone revisit classic Traveller.
Ironically, many of us started with D&D, but it was the basic rules for Traveller that we used more than anything.
You see, from what we understood, Traveller was in many ways trying to give us a space opera feel, but that's not where we took it...
And though we grew up with Star Wars, our vision of a Traveller setting was a dark and gritty version similar to Blade Runner and Alien and what would eventually come out in Alien sequels, along with various Cyber Punk movies, Firefly, and the Expanse.
From bounty hunters and mercs to rebel mutes with psionics, we also used evil corporations and a tyrannical "Federation".
However, I will also say that we tweaked to rules here and there because back then there was no way and no one to properly explain them.
It's ironic that I stumbled across your videos, because after 35? 40? years, we're actually getting back together again to enjoy Traveller.
Anyway. Great videos!
Take care!

Weak characters have a good chance in dying during career progression prior to an actual game being played. This is a neat technique for weeding out weak PCs. In the likes of DnD a PC with weak stats is expected to play with weak stats and no chance of career progression prior to the adventure being played.
