As a German who worked around these Brothers in his studies of German history at university I can tell you: It's literally the opposite.
They kept very detailed records (which are seen as authentic by historians) about where they did hear which fairy tale, even recording local differences in stories.

What is known as "The Brothers Grimm version" is not even done by them, it is the most popular ones the printing-press they worked with would publish in dedicated books or as single leaflets after they died.

Germans aren't really a grim people, the Brothers Grimm, who are 137, 529x more grim than the average person, are statistical outliers and shouldn't be counted.

Yall are sleeping on the russian versions, in one of the many stories that is at least comperable to Cinderella (as i said there are many so there isnt a "russian version of cinderella" per se) she is given a magic skull by baba yaga and it shoots flames from its eyes and burns the step-family to ash lol.

It’s even better when you know that a few years after they printed the Grimm fairytales, it was edited to be just a little less dark by doing stuff like changing evil mother to evil step-mother in the henzel and gretel story (the mother who told the father to leave them to die in the forest

Uhhh bro my German high school courses would beg to differ. There are A LOT more dark, demented German fables than just the Brothers Grimm. Even German classical poetry has some creepy stuff.

Sometimes they mellow out the fairytale because it was too dark even for them.

on the other hand theres stories that used to be way MORE messed up before the Brothers Grimm version, older versions of little Red Riding Hood had her taking her clothes off and were actually a cautionary tale about young girls and strange men

People also forget that german fairytails also have a serious background.
Example: During the 30 years war which killed a third of the german population, cannibalism or letting children die in the forest was not uncommun to survive. That's one theorie about where hensel and gretel comes from.
People literally tend to forget that there were more wars and disasters on germans ground thant WW1 and WW2, which inspired folklore

I mean Cinderella in the Grimm version was real brutal, Snow White too, Little Red Ridding Hood as well, I mean those two really loved scary children by killing them in their stories

As far as I know it was the other way round. The brothers Grimm mellowed down a lot of the tales they collected.

Something important to consider is that the Brothers Grimm did not see Fairytales as "Stories for Children", but explicitly as a form of art, a form of culture. They wanted their tales to be read and enjoyed by adults, and iirc they did explicitly say that they written versions were NOT intended for children.

The brothers Grimm also did a lot to sanitise the fairytales in their translations/retellings. For example, in many of the tales, any time a "witch", "schemer", "greedy man", "merchant", or similar epithet is used, usually the phrase originally used was just straight up "a Jew".

... which might explain away Walt Disney's interest in these tales to begin with. Crazy times, crazy times...

I think yall have read different fairy tales as kids. The chill ones like snow white and red ridinghood are from the grimm brothers while the really dark ones, like a boy getting thinner snd thinner until he vanishes after not eating or a girl burning to death after playing with candles are just folklore

I thought they made the storys more childproof in many cases..there where much darker versions of the storys..like the wolf feeding parts of the grabdmother to red riding hood and invinting her into his bed, or the step mother in hansel and gretel or snow white being their actual mother

For some reason more than one Brothers Grimm fairy tale ends with someone being placed inside a box lined with spikes and then dragged by a horse. As a bedtime story, that’s the original nightmare fuel.

Honestly, so many old German people have told me very brutal cautionatory tales, I'm sure it's not only the brothers Grimm

What if they were just horror writers? We reimagine our old media in a horror context now, grim vs campy Batman, chuck e cheese vs fnaf. They're even making a haunted winnie the poo movie. What if it's just that with the brothers Grimm?

I have a big book of the Grimm Brothers fairytales that I read a story from every night when I was a kid. I absolutely loved those stories. Now I have to take meds to stay sane so take that as you will

Most oral tradition is compromised now thanks to the works of Perrault (french author) that remade these tales to be told to the french noble children. It is impossible to say how these tales where in the time of the brothers Grimm.
