The idea for them to being siblings was a relatively last minute addition when developing ROTJ. Executive producer Gary Kurtz said in an interview "His sister was someone else way over on the other side of the galaxy, and she wasn’t going to show up until the next episode." They essentially just made Leia his sister to combine ideas they had for other potential future films

I actually genuinely like this. And I kinda wish it was kept bc it really shows that they really loved each other bc they were never meant to be siblings. Luke was supposed to have a sister but it wasn’t going to be Leia, it was going to be someone else. I still love this tho it’s really cute especially what Leia says at the end 😂

New meaning to "The Force is strong in my family"! Lucas did NOT originally plan for Vader to Luke's father. The 1976-1977 Movie Previews say : "It's a story about a Boy, a Girl, and a Universe", implying that Luke was givin Leia some saber!

Because originally the second trilogy was to be about Luke setting off to find his sister. But by the end of ESB, Lucas wanted to wrap everything up and was more concerned with toys. So Han got no heroic death. DS2 was a thing. Emperor was bigger deal.

Now why didn’t Obi Wan didn’t tell Luke that Leia is his sister and his dad was you know who? So how about that as a what if.

Better for both the film itself, and with Return of the Jedi being a thing… oh man! I’m *so, so* glad they cut this!

I still like this pairing much better than Leia and Han, it was so wholesome in A New Hope and really had the potential to grow further. I hate that Lucas made them related.

History would’ve been a lot different if Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill hooked up behind the scenes rather than Fisher and Harrison Ford.

I think they made Leia his sister to conveniently wrap the movie up in Return of the Jedi I think there was another female character that was Luke's sister
