Amsterdam storefront in 1931 - Restored Footage

Restored footage from 1931 outside Joh. Jacobs Optiek, an opticians located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands filmed as part of a newsreel titled “Shopping Week” showcasing different stores in Amsterdam.

Footage frame rate increased, upscaled and “colorized” by HistoryColored using AI technology.

If you look really closely and keep in mind that this is an optical shop, where the majority of the patrons were likely seeing about getting eyeglasses or getting their vision checked...if you look really REALLY CLOSELY you can see that she is holding something next to the side of her face with her thumb pointing up below her eye on that side.... This is the 1930s, and the optometrist exams were not the standard we know today, the women were likely trying out a sample lens outside the store to see if viewing it outside was as comfortable as inside the (likely) crowded office.... Remember, this was the interwar period in Europe, there were still many shortages of certain suppliers that would prohibit being wasteful with the valuable lenses and framing materials if the prescription wasn't right, ergo doesn't it make sense that when dealing with a client that only needs the glasses for distance vision to test out the prescription level with an individual sample lense (I'm thinking monocle style) and go outside, possibly around the side of the store and try and read some signs/adverts and then come back in and tell the specialist if the strength was adequate or too strong....

I would imagine that in those times, if you had footage filmed outside your shop, you were someone of notoriety in society. Is it possible that his shop is next to the one he is standing alongside, on the right? Just wondered why a ladies' leg is shown in the front window with all sorts of other goods. I've read the next comment, but I'm not entirely convinced.Lovin' the ladies coatwear too though! 😊❤
