some server sitting anywhere in the world which gives you data. API is something that connects you to the server which return you the data. You get the state of an object and not the object sent in XML/JSON structure. That's why it is called REST. The state of an object encompasses all of the (usually static) properties of the object plus the current (usually dynamic) values of each of these properties
