Use a usb keyboard. I used a 2000 once and used a MODERN USB WIRELESS mouse, and it works.

i've used to working with old workstation pc's that running xp in a very old cpu's. maybe it's not the slot, its the keyboard fault. have u check the keyboard to another pc? if u haven't do that try to use ps/2 to usb converter so u can check it on newer gen pc

Try taking the bios battery out and put it back in to see if it’s a problem with the bios settings!
