Firearms Expert Breaks Down Different Types Of Shotguns - Loadout Extended Chat

Gaming shotguns come in many shapes and sizes, from the archetypal Remington 870 seen in the likes of Resident Evil and Battlefield 2042, to the sci-fi styled SPAS-12 that inspired Aliens’ iconic Pulse Rifle. Whether they’re packing double barrels or drum magazines, shotguns have made quite the impact on our pop culture. But how close are the shotguns found in our games to the real-world weapons they represent?

In this episode of Loadout, Dave Jewitt visits the Royal Armouries to talk to Keeper of Firearms & Artillery Jonathan Ferguson about the breadth and variety of shotguns, from the classic double-barrelled flintlocks through to the ridiculous revolving Striker shotgun.

I prefer this Loadout episode about shotguns over the previous one tbh. I like this format better. Cool stuff, guys!

It's cute how nervous Dave seems around Jonathan. Must be intimidating!

Ah yes, frag rounds USAS-12, still the most ridiculously OP thing in an FPS I've ever experienced. Good to know John too remembers that ridiculous episode of BF history.

"it's not as easy as games make it out to be" followed by Jonathan's stare at him was amazing!

In 007 Nightfire, you can actually toggle the SPAS 12 between pump and semi. Attention to detail in that game.

I would like to see a video on handguns. Or a video on bolt action rifles mostly the mosin nagant. My dad had that rifle as a hunting rifle for deer and just a right shot makes the difference.

I love your Loadout series, especially the Firearms expert. Man, I love Johnathan in these videos!

I would be intrigued to see a video about the history of the ergonomics and usability improvements (and sometimes downfalls) of semi-automatic handguns. Kind of the throughline of how things went from something like the C96 to something like a 92fs, with some of the major advancements and some of the faulty detour dead-ends along the way.

Great series Dave, keep up the great work! Your videos are literally the only ones I watch from the Gamespot channel.
Love that we're getting so see more of you, can't wait for the next episode.

I agree that the overall blackness of the room makes seeing the gun's details a lot harder, but that shouldn't be too hard of a fix.

I like how Gamespot is slowly becoming a gun channel

Jonathan’s excitement and giddiness when explaining guns is 💯

One Special thing about Jon is that he knows video games. And what I mean is not just what the name and has played it before, but how developers change IRL to fiction to make the game more interesting to its player base.

I'm fairly certain the not-a-SPAS-12 in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (they changed the names of all the guns, but kept them true to form aside from that) had the ability to switch between pump action and semi-auto. Been a long time since I played that game, but it treated its realworld elements with more respect than ye olde standard fps games which focus more on action.

edit: checked a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. wiki and confirmed that it does this, also got reminded that you can put multiple types of ammo simultaneously (combo of slugs, shot & darts, say 4-2-2 as an example, given the available ammo in the game) and they renamed it "SPSA-14"

Super excited for more content with Jonathan but I do feel like the format could be a bit different.

I think it'd be better if Jonathan was allowed to take the reins and determine the "flow" of the episode and explain the guns in detail while Dave inquires more about the guns and ties them into the video game side of things.

I think that would let you pack more information into the videos and still be very entertaining. Again, really excited to see more of these. Keep up the brilliant work, Gamespot.

Enjoy the series but the lighting is too dark. Black weapons disappear when held up against the background.

I’ve got a Remington 870 tactical, mines got an adjustable stock and a pistol grip pump, really really fun to shoot and it’s cool to have something I’ve used a lot in games

Fun fact about the spas-12 in H3VR!

It has both pump and semi, but to switch between them is somewhat complicated

7:37 this is something you reload at home while smoking a cigg on your porch or at the dinner table not speaking to your family just to shoot it all for no reason or be the guy who just shoots and doesn’t hurt anyone in a bank heist and proceeds to do what i said in the first place.

I'd really like to see a video collaboration between Jonathan and Ian from Forgotten Weapons. I know they are friends, Ian has featured weapons from the Royal Armouries, and IGN has had Ian do a few videos like this. I'd love a fireside chat like this format with the two of them.
