Started watching Jeff's channel off and on for about two years. It doesn't take too much time to gain a real appreciation for his knowledge. Always educational. Keep up the good work.

Thank goodness, you differentiate tailings piles from mine dumps. I've argued this with other posts until I'm blue in the face. I like your models. A couple of comments.
In a shaft, the posts are called studdles. In place of all threaded dowels, j-bars can be used as these easily accommodate hanging the next set down. In Butte, our ladders were round rung which I would prefer. Lagging was 2 inch and timbers for raises was 8 by 8 inch, rough sawn. Main shaft timbering was likely 10 X 10 rough sawn. You need shaft guides for hoisting a bucket or cage.

I didn't work in a shaft, but 2 compartment raises were 7'-6" by 13' outside of timber while posts were 7'-9" and caps, dividers and end pieces were 5'-6" all was framed and rough timber dimension (maybe with some bark too). One compartment had a ladder, and timber slide, vent tube (fan bag), and possible pipes while the other compartment was used for broken ore or waste. This was lagged, but generally no lagging was used in the manway. All heavy pieces were securely blocked with wood blocking and wedges placed at the footwall and hanging wall. The ore/waste chute often had extra wood bracing, chute braces which were placed midway between main timbers..

Initial blasting from the raise and into the ore vein was called the 'brow row'' (pronounced rough to rhyme with ship bow). It was 7-1/2' wide and carefully shot so as not to damage raise timber -- if possible. .This was the ''breaking width' during stoping. Stope 'enlarging' was when width dimension exceeded 7-6".

Drilling and blasting a raise round required skilled miners. Staging may be necessary for drilling. Before blasting, a timber slide is constructed over the manway to divert blasted rock into the chute. Raises were driven by 'raise miners' who were adept with special skills for this sort of work. Will finish by saying that raises are a cramped and hot place to work in and some would say that it is dangerous work.

Jeff, it's really neat to see how a set is built in a vertical shaft. I have not yet had the experience doing that, however, I have been rehabbing an old winze that sinks at most a 45 degree angle dip. It's just like timbering a drift, but at an angle and everything wants to go down the winze! Awesome videos! It's been a long time since we've seen Slim, glad to see he still has a bone to pick with you!
