And here I was hoping that the answer would be teeny tiny sniper rifles

Rubbing fresh catnip on yourself works really well to keep mosquitos away. It also has the added benefit of attracting cats, so win-win.

The worst thing that mosquitoes do though is when they aimlessly buzz around my ear when I'm trying to sleep! If you want my blood, drink it quickly and f off! Let me sleep in peace stupid mosquito!

I love how he begrudgingly admits that worldwide mosquito death would be catastrophic

"we're their favorite snack"
so what I'm getting from this is that I'm a snack, not to the individuals I want but still a snack regardless 👀

Disney actually had to start doing this due to the fact that Tinkerbell kept getting swatted and smacked by guest tired of the mosquitoes. (There was one Tinkerbell that received permanent eye damage when a guest sprayed her in the face with deet.)

I actually do something similar at my house. My neighbors both have decent sized ponds that are, for the most part, stagnant. They produce a LOT of mosquitoes. The ponds are on either side of me, though a fair distance away. When I first moved there, the mosquitoes were terrible, so I figured out a similar way to keep them away from MY area.

I keep two small fish ponds, one a 200 gallon stock tank infront of my house, and a roughly 800 gallon one made from a small swimming pool in the back of the house. In both the water is kept constantly flowing and is stocked with small fish. The front one is just a simple goldfish pond, but the big back pond has been built up to be its own ecosystem. Because of that, its drawn in dragonflies and frogs and is by far the healthiest pond in the area. Near my house, the mosquito population is now extremely low.

I lesrned a lot about mosquitos, working for TruGreen, back in the day. Mosquitos lay eggs in still water and don't move more than a couple hundred yards away from where they are born. When taking care of your property, if you kill off any where mosquitos can lay eggs, you'll ve absolutely fine.

I pitched the exact same idea of genetically modified mosquitoes to my parents when I was like 14-15 and they thought it's ridiculous, too complicated, wouldn't work, etc, this is the second time I come across it being actually used and it feels good 🤣

No wonder they managed to convince aliens they are an endangered species

I thought some Disney princess talked to the Mosquitos to never bother them again.
There goes my childhood ignorance

They should constantly release populations of genetically modified mosquitoes everywhere

Fun fact, you can use mineral oil in your outdoor water features (ponds, birdbaths etc) use in a spray bottle & spray all water surfaces, the mineral oil will suffocate the eggs & will not harm the animals that drink from that water.

The technique you are describing is called RIDL (release of insects carrying a dominant lethal) !

Super interesting topic in the equally fascinating field of genetic engineering.
Unintended spreading of this genetic modification would be quite dangerous since mosquitos are part of various fragile biotopes. They also are a main pollinator for countless crops we consume. If the 400 meter radius observation is indeed truthful, then thats wonderful.

But it is unfortunately the case that the most studies about genetic engineering are conducted by companies who are interested in opressing any evidence suggesting their gene modifying methods are unsafe in any way.

Would you be ever so kind as to cite the study you are mentioning in this video?

I'm guessing that the reason we are the mosquito's fave is we have so little body hair and we are really good at radiating away body heat so we just have a neon Eat at Joe's sign strapped to us at all times.
