On the 23rd of December 1982 Round Oak steel works closed its doors for the final time after over 130 years of making the best steel in the world. In this two part series I will look at its history and sad end with the help of the men who worked their. This first episode has been released on the anniversary of its closure. second one will come in the new year.
This first episode will take us up to world war one. making this one has been a very personal to me as my own late father worked there until it sadly closed, he died young and never got to ask him about his job their and making these films have brought me closer to the man i wish i knew better and i hope this series will stand as a monument to the men who worked there over its many years and to those who often lost there lives making the Black Country the worlds workshop.

Hi Jamie, had family who worked at the round oak steel works via family history i’ve been doing and this video was beautifully put
together, so much information provided but always been so proud of our heritage and its a great shame most if it us lost but yet we have the little gems that still standing the test of time. Really looking forward to part 2 but a massive well done Jamie for this 👍🏻

This is great ! I started working on pedmore road in 84. Used to work with 2 guys from round oak steelworks. I walked down level street every day while the steelworks were being demolished and the merry hill was being built. I worked in plant hire so we were busy ! Thanks for making this, looking forward to part 2 👍

Great video as always. My Dad John Cook worked in the cost office (the building now opposite Wickes), but left a year or two before closure.
He does meet up with his old
ROSW colleagues from time to time, but sadly those that are still with us are getting on now

Worked there in 72 for 2 years, couple of pubs stayed open all day to service the workers, one on the main road we called Tandy’s (not sure of it’s proper name) and of course the furnaces in Level St.

Love anything to do with the Black Country as you know Jamie. I discovered through researching my family history that my Grandfather x4 Edward Smith was one of the men who helped build the Stourbridge Lion steam engine that went to America. ❤
