I don’t even have one of these…

I don’t know how people will react to this video. I just thought the topic was interesting, so I recorded this video, which was supposed to just be part of a larger video. I thought that video sucked, so I just released this as its own video and I felt obliged to since I already recorded it. Hopefully you enjoy it!

One cool factoid about the PC Engine is that Tony Hawk of all people did some video editing for some of the commercials in the US.

Thank god TG16 emulation because that console's pricing has been rising up recently in gaming collections. Even the Mini isn't safe from this. This thing is actually pretty cool, and I wish the homebrew scene was bigger. Especially homebrew ports of other games onto the TG16.

Fun facts:
- The Japanese version of the game JJ and Jeff, is actually based on a Japanese comedy show (which, also a fun fact, actually inspired an American producer to create America's Funniest Home Videos) and it's rife with potty humor. I'm surprised they've cut a lot of the crude jokes considering grossout boomed in popularity in the US thanks to Ren and Stimpy.
- There's a Ninja Gaiden remake, but it's practically unplayabe due to the weird scrolling, which is done as a way to "emulate" parallax scrolling.
- You can play Bonk 3 with the CD add-on and without it.
- It's the only console where both Street Fighter 1 and Street Fighter 2 to be played on the same platform. (Outside of the eventual emulated roms featured in the SF 30th collection)
- Naxat's sequel to Alien Crush, Devil Crush, was ported to the Genesis under the name Dragon's Fury. Personally the music is better on the Genesis.
- There's an Everdrive for the TG16, and the SD card actually fits onto the thin cards.
- I ran out (i'll edit this comment soon for more fun facts)

I have heard of the PC Engine in passing, it was on the Wii U Virtual Console if I remember correctly. So many hardware revisions smh.

Thanks for giving us our regular dose of somewhat obscure to obscure Japanese hardware/software knowledge TSF :) Great script this time, loved it haha.

The PC Engine is honestly one of the coolest libraries for me to explore because everyone has talked about SNES and Genesis to death, when the PC Engine has so many amazing hidden gems that got completely overlooked. I will also say that its upgrades are less egregious than it sounds since those system CD cards could just be used for all of the previous CD titles. If anything its just like upgrading a PC, which the PC was designed to do because of its small size (America didn't get the memo). Point is, please explore this library through emulation or the cool PC Engine Mini if you can, this console is worth looking at if you want to find more awesome retro games (Also great job on the video dude it was very entertaining)

I still get confused as to why it’s the PC Engine, and not… the Hudsotron.

i've known about the turbografx-16 for a long time thanks to some of its library being available on the Wii and Wii U virtual console, and i've heard the pc engine mentioned before in various youtube videos and whatnot. i had absolutely no idea that they were the same system

I’m happy I have the first Core Grafx and a Turbo Everdrive Pro and EDFX for it.

Well, with all the variations of PC Engine you mentioned there, it's not equivalent to say the Genesis only got two add-ons, as there were a lot more variations that led to Sega just making a mess of things and its proper follow up Saturn and Dreamcast consoles flopping, such as the Multi-Mega, Tera Drive, Wondermega, Amstrad Mega PC, Nomad, and the announced but then cancelled Neptune, etc. And in recent times Sega did similarly with all those crappy licenced Genesis clones, then the official Genesis Mini, then the Genesis Mini that also added in some CD games too, and who knows what's next. But, yeah, NEC/Hudson were even worse with the PC Engine than Sega was back in the day. And keeping it simple is one of the reasons why Nintendo ultimately won the console war back then, and indeed survived as a hugely successful console manufacturer still making world leading consoles to this day. Go figure the secret to success isn't actually that hard to figure out.

It's pronounced "cd-romrom" not squared. Very silly name.
