Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are among the most impacted countries that suffer disproportionately from the damaging impacts of climate change. To help address climate change impacts and foster adaptation in coastal areas and ocean economies in SIDS, FAO is leading a global initiative to generate climate data and information for SIDS through a series of studies.

These studies cover various topics including: identification of opportunities for nature-based solutions in SIDS; multi-hazard assessments of coastal areas of SIDS; mapping of projected distributional shifts of most relevant marine fish species for capture fisheries in SIDS exclusive economic zones (EEZs) under different warming scenarios; climate vulnerability and capacity assessments with a focus on coastal communities; and adequacy of social protection programmes and early warning systems to enhance climate action in SIDS.

This event launched new climate data and findings coming out of these studies and gather a wide range of stakeholders to discuss responses and opportunities to address climate vulnerabilities of fisheries, aquaculture and other ocean economies in SIDS.

• present new climate data and findings of studies commissioned by FAO on climate change in relation to SIDS;
• gather diverse stakeholders to discuss responses and opportunities to address climate vulnerabilities in SIDS coastal areas;
• showcase climate solutions coming out of the aquatic food systems in SIDS.
