How to Check a Power Saver Switch on AC

Is your AC unit not turning on? Sometimes the power saving switch from your electric company can be the problem. In this video I explain how the power saver switch works and how you can check if it is defective or not with and without a meter.

5 years later and this video was super useful .
I'm going to install a Ecobee smart thermostat in my house which has only 4 wires between thermostat and furnance. I will need to use the PEK adapter and was a bit worried on how that "on-call power saver" works and if the PEK adapter would work on my case. Thanks a lot

When I was a renter, the complex sneakily put those switches on. We baked every summer with hot air coming out of the vents until someone broke the switches off. God bless that person. Renters have no rights.

What does a constant red light on the power saver box mean?

Worth noting set your volt meter to AC to read the 24 to 28V. My power saver sits on the side of my unit and gets the power from the inside of the unit. In addition, many units have a high pressure switch in series with the 24V wires also which cuts the power if the internal coolant pressure goes too high, as in gets too hot / can't cool adequately, of if that HPswitch simply goes bad. Reset it and try again. Since I have solar, it makes little sense for me to have a power saver switch. Thanks for the vid really helped!

Another question though, noticed that your power manager in the video connects to your power box on the wall, in some of the configurations, the power manager connects to the condenser contact power terminal, do you mind explain the connection diagram in that configuration?

I can start my air by pushing the contact, outside, in as you show. My problem is in the box to the left of power. It is a symphony 11. Which i beleave is for the generator. That has a red blinking light showing a fault and a green blinking light in the inside panal of the house. I can't take it out of the circuit as a power saving switch. Can i take it out the the system in its box.

That explains why my mother in laws unit stop working when it gets over 100 degrees and doesn't starts working again after a certain time. I'm going back up on the roof to try this. I seen that box on her ac unit and didn't know what it was.

Does that box require 230 volt power also to run it?

My fpl system is not connected but still sends power to the ac contactor. How is that possible? Again only thing connected is the 2 wires to the contactor.

All you are doing with a switch is give them the power to shut off your air conditioner when it's 100 degrees. You will wish you paid the 5% extra. OR JUST FRY!
