20 | Crossing the Western Pacific on a Wooden Boat

Показать описание
We set out on an ocean passage across the western pacific from Fiji to New Caledonia, about 700 nautical miles. This passage had some great sailing, and some scary moments as a severe squall passed over us in the night and kept the boat pinned down on her side until we could reduce sail. Overall this was one of our best passages yet, seven days spent exploring the beauty of the open ocean.

Julia is a traditional wooden boat, built in 1960 in Desolation Sound in British Columbia to William Atkin's Ingrid design. She is a Pacific ocean veteran, with many blue water miles under her keel.

Just a note that this was filmed prior to the recent unrest in New Caledonia.

Your videos are so clear. Thanks for great videos and not about getting drunk on a beach partying or advertising a bunch of products. Just real sailing and sober people thanks.

Nothing healthier for a wooden boat than getting it out to sea and romping across an ocean. That knock down didn’t sweep the decks clean which is a testament of the durability of your deck layout.Good no nonsense boat. Thanks for sharing this incredible lifetime experience with us.

I love you guys, love the boat, love the skills. I wouldn’t disparage any woman who even set foot on a small offshore sailboat, but to see one, who was visibly scared and shaking, maintain her composure was refreshing!

It's refreshing to imagine the camaraderie cruisers share, especially in this encounter at sea. What a treat for them if their paths coincide, again

So refreshing to watch a video with appropriate, non-intrusive music. Watched it to the end. Brill! UK viewer.

You guys restore the romanticism often lost in cruising vlogs. I really appreciate how you chronicle and capture to the sea-state of your passage. Well done.

Beautiful and inspiring. Thanks so much for taking the time to get out these videos... they capture the essence of the cruising dream in a purity that few others can approach.

The greater the distance between the highest highs and the lowest lows, the more perspective and wisdom life brings. You two have just covered new ground between those two extremes. Congrats, ...enjoy the bigger in-between!

A wooden Ingrid is a thing of beauty. You make very good sailing videos along with the commentary. Best of luck.

I am 61 years old already and I am completely fascinated with sailing and the ocean and have never been sailing. I just love boats and the water. This is an interesting video I must say. I watch numerous sailing videos and this one is pretty cool. I love the idea of traveling and arriving at an anchorage and getting up in the morning sitting on the deck with a nice cup of coffee and watching everyone getting their day started, exploring the places with no schedule and enjoying different places. Love your videos and look forward to more.

Especially enjoyed the quiet moments when the music is off and just the sound of the boat making her way as she hums a familiar tune under her breath in chorus with the Wind and Sea. Have a lovely journey and thank you for sharing.

The work you put into Julia is evident in how well she is going now. Tarnished brass on a wooden sailboat are just so right. Beautiful video documentary about your adventure!

My Sunday’s are always the best when Madison Boatworks has a new video posted. Thank you for sharing your wonderful sailing adventures. Truly magnificent work. There is not another sailing channel on YouTube that captures the true essence of sailing like this channel accomplishes!

After getting caught by surprise by unexpected gusts, I cannot imagine what you two must have experienced during that squall. Glad you two and Julia made it through safe and sound.
