what might be cool is if you did a video where you suggest a start collecting box contents for factions without one.

So I collect Deepkin and adore the aesthetic and lore.

To answer your questions:

1. I think the box is great to get you going, Eels are obviously a very meta choice so that works out pretty nicely. It's also good to have some footslogging troops for you to decide if their glass cannon nature works for you, can be really good if you charge batter a group and then get some reinforcements from your hero.

2. I built the defensive eels purely because I like the look of sword and board but the offensive build seems to be more bang for your buck so would likely have 2 attasck, 1 defence if I was going the Eel route.

3. The obvious answer is the Arkhelian King/Volturnos of the Deep as this lets you use Eels as Battleline which is great. I'd consider a Tidecaster as manipulating the Tides of Death can be really handy and Lotann can provide a nice support adding much needed bravery to the army. As for other things, Leviadon, why you ask? It is a giant flying turtle, say no more.

Given that the Deepkin lack any form of tanky unit (aside from the Leviadon), I like to run a large unit of Ishlaen Guard (the defensive variant), typically either 9 or 12 of them, in one row, to just screen my namarti (who will deliver the real killing power of my army). I choose the large unit as I can buff the entire unit very easily (mystic shield, and whatever else I need). Given the Idoneth rule that enemies can only attack the closest unit, I run these in the front, making it a pretty hard to kill screen that the enemy has to kill to get through to the rest of my army.

Naturally, this isn't as effective against armies with copious deepstriking... so I wouldn't swear by this strategy against enemies like Stormcasts or the like.

1. Do I think it's a good buy?
Yes, it's a great place to start but as in the video I would only buy one of these. It's not the type of box that you buy 2-3 of and boom there's your "viable" army.
2. Which type of eels did you build?
My first eels I built offensive. If you're going infantry heavy build your eels defensively to screen. Otherwise, this question doesn't matter. If you go eel heavy you're going to be building more eels anyway.
3. What would your next purchase be?
No question after this SC Box immediately buy an Akhelian King. AKs/Volturnos are not only great heroes, but when made Commander they turn eels battleline. This SC box and a Akhelian King give you a rules legal army right away.

You make great points, Doug, as usual, though I'd definitely argue it's a great starter set. As a Deepkin player, you can easily grab this, paint it up, and you have the foundations to go in whichever direction you want: an Akhelian army or an Isharann-led Namarti army. Or (if you're not a fan of net-lists) then you can keep balanced, expanding with infantry and cavalry.

My army is a balance between Akhelian, Isharann, and Namarti, so this starter set is already my army in microcosm. I don't need another Soulrender (no matter how beautiful that model is, one is enough in the scale of games I play) but this would've been the perfect Start Collecting! set for me if I'd been getting into the army now instead of 5 months ago.

Those Deepkin models are awesome. One of the armies I have considered if I pick up AoS.

Hey man, been looking to get back into war hammer and AoS and I've been using your vids as a guider to where I might go, I was wondering if you would update the slyvaneth and the courts of flesh eaters just because they aren't as in depth as these more recent ones. I just really appreciate you opinions as someone genuinely new. Thanks ☺️

I think it can make sense to get the box 2 times.

There is a quite usefull tactic involving the Isharann Tidecaster (wizard, sadly not in the box). If you make her your General, you get the ability to reverse the order of your Tides of Death ability. If you combine this ability with the effect of choosing the "Fuethan" Enclave (the Idoneth get special additional effects, based on which enclave your army originates from), you get the ability to run & charge in round 1, which is crazy good with your 14' movements of the eels (especially the offensive eels) and their ability for better charges by musicians. So you can get to the enemy and attack in round 1 and in round 2 you can already get the ability to attack first before the enemy, which was also explained in the vid .This means you can do some heavy offensive build with focus on the eels, BUT with the Tidecaster as General, you cannot use your eels as battleline. As you are in need of some battleline, so the Namarti Thralls become usefull even in this eel focus army. So getting you the starting box 2 times, will give you the strong eels and the needed battleline. As the Idoneth units are very expensive, the box would be cheaper than buying eels and thralls seperately in my country so far (even ignoring the Soulrender at this point). Sorry for long post and bad english, but I just wanted to point out that a second buy can be usefull even when you do not focus on Thralls + Soulrender

Hey Doug, I'd like to request a video detailing the age of chaos. I'd be very interested in learning how chaos became such a fierce threat to all the realms. Nagash betraying the pantheon, Archaon leading the charge, Sigmar trying to hold the line, the battle of the burning skies, Archaon vs Nagash, Slaanesh being captured, the closing of Azyr, all of it. Just like the realmgate war series a while back, it would be an excellent addition to watch. Just a thought.

I'm in newer deepkin player, but I found the start collecting box to be a great place to start. one of the things that I did with my army is I bought two star collecting boxes, then a box of thralls and two boxes of reevers. And while you're Right not to mention alliance and faction bonuses but if you run the Mor'phan faction, or so your army is from Shyish, then the soul render is an awesome hero. I know with my army it seems like I'm guaranteed to pull back, five wounds a turn. and if you take the right artifacts to make him a little tank here if he's your general it all works out. For the eels I go with the offensive ones in a large set. And generally would I do is I have them stay back behind my thralls until I'm engaged and then I bring the eels in
And just Spike damage as much as possible. While It doesn't work out all the time It is devastating to hoard horde which I see a lot of with my play group.

When talking about expanding I plan on buying more thtalls and reevers, as well as one of each hero and building out a larger Calvary unit. I also want to pull two turtles and an idleth of mathlan. My goal is to create the big box battalion which sits a believe it around 4, 000 points when it's all said and done

Yes you want this set and yes you want that Hero, mostly b.c one of the Battalions uses him, and its actually a nice battalion, the Soulrender for sure isnt worth his points currently, but that doesnt mean he wont go down in points later, or if Thralls goes down in points, either way, if one of them does he will be even more handy to have. Also just a cool model.

I had a few battles with these guys and the eels were hard but fun to deal with, I'm now thinking about buying this box for skirmish games.

I found this very interesting. After a long break, I'm considering getting back into AOS and Deepkin has caught my eye as a faction that has cool lore, cool models and can adjust the power curve up or down for both competitive and casual games.

I hate the design on the eels where you glue the base to the bottom of the eel model. It's a small glue contact point that doesn't grab right away. Should have had a hole in the bottom where you stick the base.

i just picked up the battetomb and this se because of your lore videoes! This will be my first AoS army. Thank you so much!

Cover does not count if you have charged in the same turn. So you cannot get to 2+ save with the eels, only ever to 3+

Well I got the box last week and I just stared AOS and I think it is awesome.

Just a note about Path to Glory: The PtG book states that you can use any start collecting box as a starting warband. So this would be worth it in that sense to dive right into PtG.

You want mostly Morsarr guard for the free mortal wound output it lets you snipe units that you dont really want to fight. You use ishleen eels combined with deepkin must shoot closest target to have them act as a ranged shield until you are ready to fight around turn 3. The start collecting box is ok for a first time purchase but becomes weaker as you go since you dont really want more than 1 souldrender as he is one of the weaker priests and you will probably max out on thralls at around 20 or so unless you want a thrall build.

Perfect timing. Thinking of making these guys my next army. Great video.
