Antibiotics Magic I Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)#antimicrobialresistance#antibioticstewardship
Показать описание
Antibiotics are medications used to treat bacterial infections. They work by killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria, thereby helping the body's immune system to fight off the infection. Antibiotics have been termed as magic bullets as these are crucial in saving countless lives and improving public health.
On the other hand, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a phenomenon where microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, develop resistance to the drugs designed to kill them. This means that the medications become less effective, making infections harder to treat and potentially leading to more severe complications.
AMR poses a significant global health threat as it can render previously treatable infections untreatable. It can occur through various mechanisms, such as genetic mutations or the transfer of resistance genes between organisms. Factors contributing to the development of AMR include the inappropriate use of antibiotics in both humans and animals, inadequate infection prevention and control measures, and the lack of new antibiotics being developed.
Antibiotics should be used judiciously by everyone - general public as well as the prescribers. It should be initiated after performing appropriates tests to identify the cause of fever or infection. The antibiotics should be prescribed in the right dose and duration which also depends upon the weight of the individual, creatinine of kidney function, liver function, severity of illness & also on whether the inoculum has been surgically reduced or not !
Global efforts are needed to address this critical issue for preventing For preventing antimicrobial resistance.
