Akureyri, Iceland was an overnight port with Holland America. Does more time mean a better trip? Let’s find out while we explore the port and the town. As a jumping off point to Myvatn and Goðafoss, the town itself sometimes gets overlooked. So we visit The HOF Cultural and Conference Center to start, then explore the main town including the Akureyri Church and Botanical Gardens. We also did our thermal spa experience at the Forest Lagoon. Plus, we go over the usual port details, including public transportation, bike and scooter rentals via the Hopp App, and car rentals with Avis, Budget and Europcar. We Here’s the Lowdown!

The Port Lowdown offers detailed and fun video guides for cruise ports and destinations, helping independent, budget-minded travelers save time and money. We found that many videos lack the details we needed, such as parking, restrooms, available services, and even sidewalk quality. We act as your “port scout”, providing first-hand reports on essential information that others overlook; our videos cover port terminals, independent excursions, goods, services, transportation and even ship tours. With time ticking away during your port visit, we understand the importance of sound planning to make every moment count. Let us give you the Lowdown!

Again, really enjoyed the video. You do a great job explaining so many things in and about the port. When we were in Akureyri in July, we did a ship excursion to Godafoss Waterfall, (absolutely spectacular!), the Laufas Folk Museum with the turf farmhouse and country church, (again, a great stop), a scenic drive through the older part of Akureyri, and ended at the Botanical Gardens (small but very enjoyable). We really enjoyed the excursion. We got back to the ship with about 2 hours before "all aboard" time. I wanted to go out and explore the town somemore and take more pictures (photography is our thing), but my wife was too tired from the long day, so I was off on my own. I. walked past the HOF Cultural and Conference Center twice, but did not go in. It looks like a great place to start the exploration or town. I walked thru the main town almost down to the Botanical Gardens, then down to the waterfront, all the way back to the cruise terminal. The thermal spa experience at the Forest Lagoon that you showed look great. Too often, we find these places either too intimadating or just too difficult to deal with changing clothes, showering, etc. This place looked great, and we will definitely go there the next time we are in Akureyri. Thanks again. -Marty
