How JR Robinson & Jeff Porcaro play the hihat differently

Dirk sharing his insight about how two drumming legends approach the hihat differently 👊

The important thing to remember is that neither approach is better, they are just simply different.

Each approach will feel more natural to play in certain musical situations and at different tempos but above all they will have a different sound and feel in your grooves!

It is worthwhile experimenting with the two approaches and add them to your arsenal.

Study the greats and then make it your own ✌️

Rock with you is faster and it is more challenging with one hand :-)

I remember seeing JR Robinson at Ziljain Day 1996. He was boring

The late Great Carlos Vega was the best Hi-Hat player ! FACT: Jeff Porcaro loved Carlos Vega's drumming, no drummer can play like Carlos did.

Kind of oversimplifying here. You can find plenty of examples of JR playing one handed 16ths and plenty of examples of Jeff playing them with both hands. Tempo tended to be the deciding factor in which technique was used. Had Jeff gotten the Rock With You gig he almost certainly wouldn’t have attempted one handed 16ths at such a brisk tempo.

JR's one of the most overrated drumers.
