Julian Russell Story's painting, "The Black Prince at Crécy," captures a pivotal moment from the Battle of Crécy, which took place on August 26, 1346, during the Hundred Years' War. The painting depicts Edward, the Black Prince, the eldest son of King Edward III of England, who played a crucial role in the English victory against the French forces.

The Black Prince was so impressed by the blind King of Bohemia's tenacity and courage, that to this day the king's sigil of three ostrich feathers still forms part of the Prince of Wales heraldry.

There's even more to the story. The battle of Crecy was essentially between England and France in 1346.
King John of Bohemia was a friend of the french king and vowed to help in case of war. Years later, when John was fully blind because of an hereditary disease, he still joined the french king at Crecy to honor this oath.
When Edward of England found John dead after the battle, he was impressed by his honor and courage. He supposedly said something along the lines of "Here lies the prince of chivalry, but he does not die."
Edward also added John's banner to his Coat Of Arms, which read "Ich dien" or "I serve (God)" in english. I think it is still part of even the modern coa of the Prince of Wales.
King John of Bohemia really became a symbol of duty and chivalry in the late middle ages.

I can’t imagine how deafening the silence of a battlefield would feel after a battle is over… just listening to the wind blow… the still bodies that simply become part of the canvas. Harrowing.

He's admiring his courage which is why he took up his coat of arms after.

Funfact from Bohemian:
John loved battles so much that even when he lost his sight, he commanded 2 men to tie themselves one on each of his sides to lead him to this particular battle. ( he was a terrible father tho )

Edward would live on for many years after this battle. Though he would never beir the crown he had fought all his life for. He is still remembered to this day, as one of the greatest genrals of the hundred years war.

He would never have the chance to succumb to the same fate as this slain king he so revered. But perhaps he found peace in the end.

Pretty sure the Bohemian king was blind and had his mount tied to the mounts of his bodyguard and directly charged into the thick of battle. Dude was a fucking Legend and deserved some respects paid

The way crows and vultures will almost immediately descend onto battlefields for food really feels like Death's way of saying "this was pointless, thanks for the meat"

Most people to have ever lived never made it to 27 years old... Makes time seem like a treasure we take for granted.

"Far be it that the King of Bohemia should run away. Instead, take me to the place where the noise of the battle is the loudest. The Lord will be with us. Nothing to fear. Just take good care of my son."

For those who do not know what Bohemia is. It’s basically Czech Republic in the Middle Ages.

That’s an experienced warrior and should see war like this it’s never glorious. Peace solution is always top priority.

The Black Prince sounds like a name for someone who'd lord over their kills, but he didn't. Many who'd been in his place might have, but not him. He was, in this instant, humble and honorable. So he honored his enemy, and immortalized him. They dont make men like that anymore.

I remember the indian emperor Ashoka, After the kalinga war where his army killed so brutally he was devastated after watching the aftermath, He left the kingdom and started following Buddhism. Hes the reason why Buddhism is so widespread now.

That's why God warns us to love one another as He did with us...
This is the fruit of hate...

Art like this is so deep and beautiful...
As a kid i didnt pay much attention...
As a teenager sometimes they were interesting...
As an adult i love these paintings and would like some in my home... If someone were to ask me what or why, id gladly tell them.
