Best comparison of these two lenses I have seen, you covered everything. I’ve owned both of these lenses and while the 1.8 is good the 1.4 is better in nearly every way, so I did find it frustrating when certain reviewers were claiming the f1.8 was better just because it was a tad sharper in the middle when wide open. The vignetting and the softness at the edge of the pictures on the f1.8 is hard to look past, whereas the f1.4 is crystal clear and bright from edge to edge. Also as you’ve shown on video there really is a drastic difference in brightness between the two lenses. The 50mm f1.8 is a great lens and can take some great pictures, no doubt about it. But the f1.4 is just that level above. Just wish I had the money to afford the f1.2 L lens… Thankyou, great review.

Why dont you use these type of lenses on people. Like its a portrait lens. And we see a wall as an exg... 🤔🤔🤔 I mean. I dont see the big of a difference. Its a

the f1.8 is great for video but as a beauty vlogger you might need extra lighting equipment compared to the f1.4 which does better in the same low lighting conditions

Good video but i'd like to see the lenses used out in the field. Like having a human as a subject and not just a brick wall.

I much appreciate this detailed yet succinct comparison. I've been using my 50mm STM lens a lot, and although valuing it's good qualities, wishing for better. I don't want to carry the hefty Sigma f/1.4 around with all my other gear, and so it is good to know that the Canon f/1.4 is definitely a step up in image quality from the 1.8.

Thank you very much for this review. I have the 1.8 and just bought the 1.4 at a pawn shop for $150 and another video showed the 1.8 being sharper but now I can see they must have had a defective one. I guess I'll keep both and use the 1.8 for video and the 1.4 for stills.

Is it good to use f/1.4 for indoor and outdoor portrait?

1.4 is great but is not a must if you own the 1.8 stm

I feel so annoying asking because so many people already asked if these lenses would suit their camera, lol, but I’m about to purchase a Canon 90D. Would these both be compatible? I want to get back on making Youtube videos, but also have something suitable for my Instagram pictures. I know both are a great fit, but would one be a better match than the other for my goals and the kind of model I’m getting?

Thank you for this video. The differences are very big indeed. Totally different performance. I would certain go for the USM, albeit a bit noisier, as I don't use it for videos. I just need a performer in low light conditions and a sharp lens for street photography.

Can I use any of these lenses on Canon M50 mirrorless with the proper adapter?

The 1.8 doesn’t have full time manual focus, it’s by wire

One thing I was hoping you would have mentioned was noise, how loud is the 50 STM compared to the 85? I have the mark 1 50 1.8 and its so incredibly loud and slow, I wouldnt mind upgrading but dont want to if its still fairly loud. I just got the 85 and blown away at how quiet it is and how fast it focuses.

Canon 80D paired with 50mm f1.4 would work for me for portraits.

0:44 The crop factor does not magnify the focal length (i.e. a 50mm does not "become" or "turn into" an 80mm lens on a cropped sensor camera). It's the same focal length on both cropped and a full-frame sensor cameras.
