I served on 'Snakey Blakey' as a stoker - March 1973 to May 1974 - joined it while it was in dry dock in Pompey undergoing DED, the first three months of my draft was billeted in Jarvis Block, Vicky Barracks, before the Name change to Nelson.

Worked in the boiler room '- Kilo Kettles' - my POMEM was 'Badger' Brooks, originally from Norfolk, my home county, and for 3 months was seconded to HQ1 - my PO of my watch in HQ1 was Shep Woolley - some fab days I recall. Billeted in 3L1 mess, tankies used to be in 3L2.

My father John Stratford was on the Blake, PO/PTI. Unfortunate that he past a few years ago, he would've really enjoyed this footage.

A couple years before me. Blake was my first ship. I was an ordnance electrical mechanic on the 6" gun turret in 1974.

My father was on this tour I’m pretty sure. He was CPO (possibly PO then) David “Buck” Taylor. He was a commcen bod. After this he went to Naples. Dad passed away about 10 years ago. But he was a Navy man through and through. I went in Blake a couple of times a small child for family day - got lost once whilst mum and dad were drinking in the mess 🤣🤣🤣

I was christened on her in 72. My father was a CPO (Tiff electrical ) On the fwd 3 inch guns (B Turret). He did the SF trip too.. It was his final draft before (VERY reluctantly) Retiring as he requested for an extension but was declined as his branch wasn't needed at the time.. Shame has he was very bitter about it for many years afterwards..

Many a famous Royal Navy (HMS HOOD) sailed in those locks . Shame about the projector noise, are you projecting that onto your living room wall?

I think I remember the conversion of Blake and Tiger was not very successful they were plagued with propulsion problems.

Surely they had a better quality film than this in the 70s? I've seen better footage from World War One.

Deliciously ugly but still NOT as minging as the QE’s and 45’s - the new stuff afloat looks awful - but I am told that looks aren’t everything!!! 😜
