DESCRIPTION

In this video, we’ll cover essential winter driving skills to help you stay safe on snowy and icy roads. Fresh snow has created slippery conditions. Here we demonstrate how to handle your vehicle when faced with snow-covered roadways. Using a set of pylons in a parking lot, I walk you through a series of exercises designed to teach you the fundamentals of winter driving, such as braking, acceleration, and steering on slippery surfaces.

You’ll learn what happens when you over-accelerate, over-steer, or over-brake in snowy conditions. You understand how to respond when ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) engages on ice and snow. I’ll explain the normal sensations when ABS kicks in—such as grinding, shuddering, or pedal pushback—and how to maintain control while stopping.

Additionally, I highlight the importance of space management: leaving enough room around your vehicle to handle unexpected skids or sudden braking, preventing collisions with other vehicles. If you’re new to driving in winter weather or want to improve your skills, these exercises and tips will help you drive more confidently and safely.

For more tips on safe winter driving, make sure to subscribe to the Smart Drive Test YouTube channel!

Good luck on your road test.

As soon as you started talking, I was like, "Yep! That's the accent I want teaching me how to drive in the snow!" Thanks for the tips!

I had a understeer situation for my very first snow fall ever. Still had my all season tires on my front wheel drive only sedan. I was making a left turn from a complete stop across two lanes of traffic. I put too heavy a foot on the gas peddle, immediately caught a skid, applied the break and tried to steer out of it.... not a chance. Car didn’t budge and I went over a curb and into a tree. Three lessons I learned. 1. Winter tires early before the snow starts and 2. Never, ever, accelerate into a turn and never hit the breaks when you slide. Good luck this winter !

I was going too fast on the interstate, hit a patch of thick snow, instinctively hit my brakes, & I was suddenly just along for the ride. I wound up in a 180° messing up my front end after striking the concrete median. $5K damages. Lesson learned.

I’ve watched your channel before I’ve ever gotten my drivers license. Two years later, I’ve gotten my license and still watch your videos for driving tips. Thank you!☃️❄️

Another tip: If you see another car ahead of you start to skid, immediately slow down and get as far away from the skidding car as you can. If that driver has lost control, there's no guarantee he won't spin out and collide with your vehicle. I've been in that situation where a car ahead of me spun out and could have hit me if I had been closer.

My friend said I need a therapist because I’m too scared to drive. Nobody bothered to teach me in the winter. Here I am watching YouTube hoping for the best. Looks like this guy knows what he’s doing, so I’m going to take his advice.

No idea why this came up in my suggested viewing but glad I did! I literally had my first driving lesson in the ice and snow with my dad **mumble** years a Best way in my opinion to learn. He would have me go then grab the wheel and cause a skid when I did't expect it. You learn quick! Great times in the High School parking lot... Miss that man he has been gone 20years now. Key is your point of slow down. Dad always used to say "Slow and go - Fast and crash"

Just moved to South Dakota and today will be my first attempt to drive in snow. I did make sure to get a 4wd truck and snow tires since I’m new to it. My wife is in a fwd with snow tires. We are fortunate to be close to jobs for our first year of driving snow conditions.

In America, the Police show up and shut it down if you try practicing this in abandoned parking lots and your vehicle is moving around like this.

So basically you used a winter driving video as an excuse to do some donuts in a snowy parking lot)

I've had a skid in loose gravel. Lots of fun in dirt in the subie. Thinking of moving to Colorado from California, so I hope when it snows I can learn to do all this on my own without incident. Thanks for the video.
