In these difficult times, it came as a big surprise to find out my Amiga hard drives had been infected. Looking at the old Virus Checker II, it just wasnt good enough to cut the mustard. So here is a video I made showing how to safely fix legacy Amiga viruses in 2020.

The inspiration behind this one was a comment from one of my viewers, who suggested my Amiga 35 batch of Amiga tools were infected by the Happy New Year 96 virus. Instantly I put pen to paper in an attempt to set him straight, but then decided to actually check it out. Sure enough, my whole system (my normal Workbench drive and also my Files drive) was infected. The first thing I tried was the old Virus Checker II, but although this claimed to remove it from memory, it didnt, and the virus didnt go away. As a backup, I had a year 2000 version of Virus Executor - perhaps the last freeware virus checker on the scene. This time I had more luck, and after running the 'fixed' files, they ran perfectly and without corruption.

Non-the-less, I used a 2017 backup I had made of my system to overwrite all of the files, and put them back to a non virus affected or fixed state. The reason I found online. Apparently the installer comes from the Demo Manic 2 program, which I had installed in 2019 in an attempt to find an old RSI Demo maker type program, for a scrolling message on the Top 400 Amiga games countdown video. I didnt find what I was looking for, so the result of all of this was a waste of time.

I backed up the system in Jan 2019, and this is the infected system you see my fixing in the video. By this stage, I had a perfect 2017 Workbench backup, a perfect 2020 reconstruction, and a virus infected 2019 backup, so this was what I disinfected. With 060 + JIT emulation, and a Picasso 4 card in there, the check of the whole thing took less than an hour, and is worth it for peace of mind.

Do make sure to read the output file and make sure your system works 100%, because when I used Virus Checker, it trashed my C commands and the machine failed to reboot. It just said 'Execute cannot be run' or something.

Do these take out Saddam that infects disk-validator?
Also, I remember using "Nuke!" virus killer successfully with my floppies back in the day.
Also Master Virus Killer was pretty handy.
