Romania's Bucovina region is renowned for its painted churches - so much so that UNESCO listed included them on its World Heritage Sites list in 1993.

Fun language fact - while you might guess that Bucovina is so called because "bucolic" (meaning pastoral) is such a fitting adjective, it's actually to do with the beech trees to be found in the region, and the name comes from the Slavic word "buk" meaning beach tree.

Bucovina is an ideal counterpoint to Romanian capital Bucharest and pairs well with some time in Transylvania too.
