History of the Daiquiri | How to Drink

Today I talk about the history of the Daiquiri and make it tow ways: an early roots version, and the way I enjoy it now.

The Daiquiri has been around a very long time. By one account it's named after Daiquiri beach near Santiago, Cuba, where miner's would enjoy these throughout the day to cool off. A guy by the name of Jennings Cox, an American engineer takes credit for the drinks invention, but that is almost certainly lies. Mixing rum, sugar, and lime, goes way way back before Ol' Jennings ever set foot on the island of Cuba. In fact, the word "Daiquiri" comes from Taíno origins and the beach might be more accurately named after the drink, rather than the other way around. The Daiquiri probably started its existence as something like a swizzle, which is the first version I make here. Then I shake up my favorite recipe for a daiquiri and have a damn fine time doing it.

Roots Daiquiri
• Fill glass with Crushed Ice
• Add 2-4 spoons sugar
• 1-2 limes of juice
• rum to taste
• swizzle & enjoy

Daiquiri
• 1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Demerara Simple Syrup
• 1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Lime Juice
• 2 oz. -or- 60 ml. Rum
• Shake & Strain

Seeing Greg sloshed just absolutely makes my day, you can tell that he's seen so much Dora the Explorer and his brain is half gone by now

Hey Greg, long time fan here (like been watching since before I could drink long time), I want you to know that because of you and this show I actually collected makeshift barware over the years (a rocks glass from a trip to the JD distillery, a pint glass from the dollar store with 10 basic recipes for cocktails {not using those ofc, you have covered them all so when I try them id rather your recipes, but its cute}, a stolen half a tin and hawthorn strainer from an Applebee's marg, a shot glass my girlfriend got me from her vacation from the Bahamas {cuz I don't have a jigger yet})

And with this contraption of a Bar I actually made Daiquiris for my D&D group, it was defiantly a first time deal but it was so much fun and what I liked was in the glass! I just want to thank you for introducing me to this wonderful world of cocktails as a proper hobby, I raise my glass to you sir!

I can't believe they didn't cast you as Backpack in the live-action Dora the Explorer. A damned shame.

I love your knowledge of Dora lore. I’m a grown ass adult but I went and saw the Dora movie with my girlfriend. It is a flawless film.

Greg. I really enjoy these episodes where we get a couple different ways to put together the drink. They're really informative and show off your relaxed and jovial attitude towards cocktails. Since you agreed to the Penicillin episode I've not stopped talking about it to friends. Thanks again for that! Have a smashing night!

That ending was one man’s rapid decent into madness. Greg is out here killing his liver for the content, much appreciated. 👍

I love that he loves what he does, you can tell. Also I just made a homemade daiquiri for the first time. Making ingredients yourself is the way to go people, my God that’s good.

This is why I watch and love this channel. I for some reason never would've thought of using aged rums to make a daiquiri.
