Why You SHOULD Visit Llandudno! - Seafront Tour, North Wales

Llandudno is a coastal town in North Wales. It’s known for North Shore Beach and 19th-century Llandudno Pier, with shops and a games arcade. Northwest of town, the cliffs of Great Orme headland jut into the sea. Ancient tunnels lead to a cavern at Great Orme Mines. A 1902 tramway has an upper and lower section, and travels to the headland’s summit. To the east, smaller headland Little Orme is a nature reserve. In 2022 the Great Orme Tramway will celebrate its 120th anniversary, yet each year thousands of people still take immense pleasure in travelling to the summit of the Great Orme in an original early twentieth century tramcar. Others prefer to wind their way around the headland, admiring some of the most strikingly beautiful and dramatic scenery, which is visible only from the Marine Drive. This four mile shelf was cut out of the sheer limestone cliffs in 1878 and is designed for vehicles and walkers alike. Alternatively, it is possible to catch a bus in opposte the Pier and go on an informative and visually rewarding sight-seeing tour of the Orme.

Llandudno will always hold a special place in my heart. My parents met at the end of the pier back in 1969. They got married a year later and were together till they both died in 2018 ❤🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

The reason to visit Llandudno, is that it has a distinctive Victorian charm.
Also 98% of the land the town is built on, is owned by Lord Mostyn, its been like this since the late 16C.

Lord Mostyn lives permanently in London, but his land agents, Mostyn estates, rule llandudno with a rod of iron.
Any hotel or B&B that looks a little shabby, is told in no certain terms to do something about it, that's why the resorts famous North Parade looks so magnificent.

No ice cream or chip shop vendors or even amusements are allowed on its famous promenade, and the oldest Punch & Judy still operating in the Uk, the Codman family only recently gained permission for a permanent stand on the prom.

Richard Codman first arrived in town in 1851, and the family have been entertaining the visitors ever since, but actually sighting the show on the prom itself, was only granted recently.

llandudno is such a lovely resort, with an easy paced way of life, and its been my home town for 23yrs, and i love it.

It's nostalgia time again ....

Way back in the 1960s, there used to be a ferry service from Liverpool to LLandudno; if you didn't want to stop here, you could stay on to Bangor, but most people would disembark at the LLandudno pier for a few hours; there would even be time to take the tram to the top of the Great Orme. This service enabled a relatively cheap day out during the school summer holidays when one parent, usually the mother, had to provide entertainment for her bored children.

I don't know when the ferry service ceased to be in business but I can clearly recall being with my girlfriend (later my wife) on top of the Great Orme listening to Alan "Fluff" Freeman host Radio 1's Pick Of The Pops on my transistor radio. By the time we returned to Llandudno to catch the ferry, Alan concluded the show with The Rolling Stones' Jumping Jack Flash, so that dates it to the summer of 1968.

As a Gen Z kid, I've only ever known most of the UK's old seaside resorts as run-down shadows of what they used to be, but Llandudno seems to have avoided that decline. It is really nice that we have this preserved old resort town to enjoy even today, and I can vouch that the cable car is definitely worth a go.

I moved there 45 years ago, love it. Shame you didn’t have time to feature the other beach on the West Shore.

Visited Llandudno last May for the first time as my grandparents honeymooned here in 1938. Have a photo of them in Vaughan street near the train station and had our photo taken in the same spot, very little has changed. Loved Llandudno especially the Pier and the many shops and restaurants and will definitely return to this beautiful town for a longer stay.

The stone circle represents that the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru ( National Eisteddfod of Wales ) was held in Llandudno. Many local people speak Welsh. The Great Orme is called Pen Y Gogarth in Welsh and has Sant Tudno' s Church. The pier BTW used to have ships that went to the Isle of Man.
