introduction to autoencoders in deep learning with tensorflow

what are autoencoders?

autoencoders are a class of artificial neural networks used for unsupervised learning. they are primarily employed for tasks like dimensionality reduction, anomaly detection, and feature learning. an autoencoder consists of two main parts:

1. **encoder**: this part compresses the input data into a lower-dimensional representation, called the "latent space" or "code."
2. **decoder**: this part reconstructs the original input data from the compressed representation.

the goal of an autoencoder is to minimize the difference between the original input and the reconstructed output.

applications of autoencoders

- **dimensionality reduction**: autoencoders can reduce the dimensionality of data while preserving important features, similar to principal component analysis (pca).
- **image denoising**: autoencoders can be trained to remove noise from images.
- **anomaly detection**: they can learn the normal patterns in data and flag anomalies during reconstruction.
- **generative models**: variants like variational autoencoders (vaes) can generate new data samples.

installing tensorflow

before we start coding, make sure you have tensorflow installed. you can install tensorflow using pip:

building an autoencoder with tensorflow

we'll build a simple autoencoder for the mnist dataset, which consists of handwritten digits.

step 1: import libraries

step 2: load and preprocess data

we will load the mnist dataset, normalize it, and reshape it for the autoencoder.

step 3: build the autoencoder model

we will create a simple autoencoder with an encoder and a decoder.

step 4: compile the model

now we will compile the model using the adam optimizer and binary crossentropy loss function.

step 5: train the autoencoder

we will train the autoencoder on the training data.

step 6: evaluate the autoencoder

after training, we can visualize some of the original and recon ...
