ENTER THE DRAGON: Bruce Lee’s Classic Turns 50

For many of us, 1973’s Enter the Dragon ranks as one of the greatest action films of all time. Bruce Lee’s only solo big-screen English-language outing it’s the movie that turned him into a global icon and kicked off the kung-fu craze of the mid-1970s. Tragically, Lee would die before it ever hit theatres, but his legend remains vital to this day, with the movie now celebrating its 50th anniversary.

In this episode of Reel Action, we dig into the film and its lasting legacy. We examine how Lee’s philosophy made it richer intellectually than people give it credit for while paying tribute to the badass supporting cast. As good as Lee is, he’s ably supported by the late John Saxon and Jim Kelly, two American actors who also happened to be kick-ass martial artists in their own right.

"The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering" - Bruce Lee

This man single-handedly open wide the doors to Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Jet Li, Chick Norris and countless others.Let alone the huge wave of "karate" schools in the late 70's and in the 80's.The martial arts films, the millions of kids around the globe who wanted to look and move like him. And that is just the tip of the iceberg of what Bruce Lee did worldwide.Legend.

The fact that this movie and Bruce Lee are still on the radar almost 50 years later is a testament to how badass this movie and Bruce were.

The “Hall of Mirror” sequence alone is worth the price of admission.

My first time seeing it, I was working in a movie theater. I went with two other ushers. Our manager from our theater got us free passes to the other theater where it was playing. I am a white Jewish guy, one usher was black and the other was Chinese. Perfect! We loved it.

Thanks for the excellent video essay on this martial arts classic.

Everything about this flick was legendary....The villain, the sets and of course.... THE Bruce Lee.

I remember near the end of the film, when Bruce Lee fights the villain, he delivered probably the most powerful kick in the face

This was his signature movie, but for me his single most iconic fight scene came from Way of the Dragon with Chuck Norris in the Colosseum. You just can't beat that.

Good retro-review of this ground-breaking film.Never get tired of watching Lee's films or reading books about him. Or documentaries.Lee made his dreams come true by working his behind off, nobody gave him anything. All these decades later and we're still talking about the LITTLE-DRAGON . RIP-Mr Lee.

During the pandemic my son and I watched a lot, and I mean a lot of action movies. He enjoyed Enter the Dragon a lot. He chuckled when Bruce would make noises. My son called them "Karate sounds". The movie definitely holds up IMO.

The Art of fighting without fighting - a great philosophy by the late Bruce Lee. Enter the Dragon influence can be felt on pop culture from video games like Mortal Kombat as well as the influx of martial arts movies that came out in the 1980’s.

You can watch Enter The Dragon a billion-fo-fillion times and it never gets old. Bruce Lee is simply phenomenal. All 5 Bruce Lee movies were masterpieces of martial arts cinema. No goofy shit, no compensating stunt, no wires, no dance choreography on tables and 5 hour fights with henchmen. Bruce's films were grounded, emotionally charged and every punch, kick and hits in general looked like they had IMPACT.

Enter the Dragon is one of my favorite movies and favorite Bruce Lee movies along with Return of the Dragon aka Way of the Dragon, John Saxton and Jim Kelly were also badass in this movie.

Every now and then in life, people will step out of their comfort zones and ask their friends, "ok, show me a movie that I wouldn't normally watch on my own, to broaden my horizons." This is almost always the movie I show them. Most people don't watch "kung fu flicks" so I always tell them 'if you're going to watch just one badass kung fu lick in your life, make it this one.'

Jim Kelly said in an old interview in the 90s...originally his character was actually supposed to live and John Saxons Character was supposed to die but John's agent used the fact that John was a far more experienced actor so Jim's character died and Johns lived would've been alot better of an ending if Bruce and Jim fought side by side

I still can't believe the BBFC cut the nunchaku scenes for the UK audience at one point. Made me want to learn how to use them even more; thanks Bruce!

This film was played in a nightclub one time. All the guys were watching it like they were at the cinema. Not dancing and larking about, but transfixed on the screen lol. Bruce just has an unsurpassed screen presence and charisma. Absolute classic
