Groundwater & the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Crash Course Geography #25

The Arab-Israeli Conflict, which is the ongoing political tensions and military conflicts between Arab nations and Israel, is one of the longest and most complex disputes in the world. Today, we're going to focus on more recent events, and look specifically at the role groundwater plays in preventing a pathway to peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Groundwater makes up the largest portion of available fresh water on Earth, but as we'll see, access isn't always fair and its availability doesn't always line up neatly with political borders.

I'm a bit disappointed that the technologies of desalination were not mentioned, and how much the countries of the Middle East are turning to desalinating water from their seas and more water-saving technologies and practices than relying on the hydrologic cycle (rainwater, snowmelt, and groundwater) for human consumption.

Glad they talked about water footprint. I’m lucky to live where water is available I hope some peaceful solutions can work out.

This series is so great! I wish I'd known back in high school that geography could be so interesting

I'm always very proud of Crash Course for approaching difficult subjects with nuance and kindness. It's difficult to talk about issues that are contentious politically and it is impossible to be without bias, but I think that it *is* possible to talk about such things with kindness and consideration. While it is a tall order, I would encourage commenters to remember DFTBA.

One of the facets of the conflict unknown to many.

Ironically Israel's other water-related politics is surprisingly stable. I've read that there has not yet been a war fought over water rights, though this may change in the near future.

6:09 - I know this is a heavy topic but I found the mention of snow kinda funny - this area gets an average of about 1 snow day a year, and even that only happens in the most mountainous parts.

It is clear that Palestinian suffers more than Israeli no matter who's right or wrong

It’s not a “conflict” it’s an occupation

Oof Haven't watched this yet but hoping it accurately covers the water crisis between Israel and Palestine and how Israel deprives Palestinian villages of water

I liked how you fixed the borders of Morocco on the map! Much appreciated!

Wow
I was surprised to see another episode of crash course world history about my home country 😅.
Turns out this came from the geographic angle, which I like quite a lot!

Thank you for your video. Please consider covering the hydropolitics behind GERD and the Nile. Also, the acquifiers shared by Egypt and Libya are undercovered.

No one over here is focusing on water in politics, and we don’t hear about this from the other side. How each side actually uses and conserves water (or doesn’t) is totally ignored. There is a more than a little reading into this conflict issues which are very much not what anyone on the ground is talking about.

"Worldwide there are 366 aquifers that cross borders..."

Superbly done. Very even handed and fair take on a very sensitive subject. That is not easy to do and deserves recognition!
