I was 12 during the flood. I'll never forget how it came up, stayed up, and every time people thought it might be ending one more crest would happen. I'll also never forget how many occasions I saw grown men with watery eyes, at their wits end. Many old timers had spent their entire life along the river, and saw action in WWII. Seeing even them struggle to grasp how bad it was, will always atick with me.

Having been born on the Illinois side of the river in 1944 I have experienced flooding as a kid. I moved away in 1959. Like Hurricane damage and river flooding..why build so tight on the beach and on the river. Let space be there for water to do it's natural thing. There should never be building in a flood plain nor close to the waters edge on the beaches. Just my thoughts.

I was at Lowry AFB Colorado for training when this happened. I remember watching about it on the news and calling my Mom to make sure our family was okay.

Great topic and discussion. It is gonna be unfortunate when all if Gumbo Valley goes under, but it is definitely gonna happen. The lessons will be learnt agian

The 2019 Flood is only 3 quarts shy of the 1993 Flood.

I was 5-6 years old during this. I'll never forget watching the water rising and rising over the days till my mom took me and my siblings to the top floor where we lived for months. I was 5 and turned 6 in that july. Worse birthday ever when the neighbor kept yelling we were all gonna die etc. It was crazy to think back on it now. I was a child playing in that vile sh*t water not knowing the the first day of rain wouldn't be over for weeks and I was never going to see Chuckie Cheese lol

I was working for American Meter Co., installing trace devices for Laclede Gas. I saw tons of damage, mostly on the South Side.

Aside from the damage and the house floating away when the levee broke and all the other "whoa, this is Biblical in scope" stuff the thing I remember most was how much people cared and came together to help. It was trendy to go help fill sandbags. A group of my family went, somewhere I still have one of those cans of water A-Busch provided when they actually turned production cans into water to donate like something seen in WWII. It was mostly all in vain, but people tried.
