No one would record this Mac Davis song IN THE GHETTO as it was too raw, especially during the race riots in the 1960s. A top RCA executive said we can't release it. Elvis heard it and said, "That's my next single, son" and walked away. The great Sammy Davis Jr famously turned it down. Only Elvis was willing to risk his career to get that record on the air-waves. Only Elvis could have performed it and gotten the radio play when it came out in the late 1960's, during the Civil Rights Movement. He made it his platform. One of his major public statements on the issues of racism and poverty. Without uttering a single press release or public statement. Not a single political word or comment. Amazing power of song by a very brave and loving human being.

If you've heard that Elvis was an empathetic, compassionate, generous and talented person, then we've heard the same things.

“Trying to get to you” from his 68 Comeback Special shows Elvis raw and powerful!

Anything from his 1968 comeback TV special is worth checking out, especially the show ending song, "If I can Dream". It is an amazing performance.

Never apologize for reacting the the King of rock and roll! Elvis is an icon! He was ahead of his time and is second to none! Long live the king, may he rest in peace!

The reason Elvis is the greatest rocker of all time is cause rock comes from gospel rhythm and blues and he had it all every bit of it along with swag a humbleness to him!💯

"Suspicious Minds" or "Don't Be Cruel" should be next, but really you can react to almost any Elvis song you like - they are all great!

'Elvis Presley - An American Trilogy (Aloha From Hawaii, Live in Honolulu, 1973)' comes with my highest recommendation Biss. It's an absolutely jaw-dropping performance by Elvis and the stellar band of musicians and vocalists with him on that stage. Goosebumps. I actually remember my parents allowing me to stay up past my bedtime to watch this special when it aired live, that night back in 1973. Great memory from my youth. Love your channel!🙂

As an "older" Elvis fan, this was written by the late performer and song writer Mac Davis for Elvis. btw it was a huge hit in 1973 and well recieved. Elvis was very empathetic to the plite of the poor since his own background was quite similar, but placed in the "wrong side if the track" of Tupelo Mississippi, and later the projects of Memphis, Tennessee. He never forgot his roots and was extremely generous to friends and strangers alike. Another Civil Rights song written & performed exclusively by Elvis was "If I Can Dream" performed live in his "1968 Come back Special". Elvis perfected the genre of "Rock N Roll" from his own unique blend of Blues, Gospel and Country. He sang many genres excellently from Blues to opera, and everything in beteen. It would take a long time to really "get" Elvis, but this is a great start!

I agree, Elvis Presley poured his feelings in 'In The Ghetto' it was a very powerful song. You should hear him sing gospel tunes, especially 'Where No One Stands Alone', that may be one of the most powerful performances I've ever heard.

Elvis Presley, known as The King of Rock 'n' Roll. There are so many great songs he sang, most of them covers or songs wrote for him as I don't think he wrote many. If you want ballads, Love Me Tender, Always on My Mind, Burning Love, Flaming Star, It's Now or Never, Are You Lonesome Tonight and etc. More rocky songs, Don't Be Cruel, Jailhouse Rock, Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, All Shook Up, Suspicious Minds, Teddy Bear etc. As of 2020, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) credits Presley with 146.5 million certified album sales in the U.S., third all time behind the Beatles and Garth Brooks. He holds the records for most gold albums (101, nearly twice as many as second-place Barbra Streisand's 51), and most platinum albums (57). His 25 multi-platinum albums is second behind The Beatles' 26. His total of 197 album certification awards (including one diamond award), far outpaces the Beatles' second-best 122.] He has the third-most gold singles (54, behind Drake and Taylor Swift), ] and the eighth-most platinum singles (27).

This was one of his biggest hits. People loved all his songs but there were some that got radio play or were in movies or were in recorded concerts, and those became his best known songs. This was a radio hit and this concert was recorded a year later. It was an extremely controversial subject at the time.
