The event that shaped the world of Blade Runner is an event you've probably never heard of: World War Terminus. CJ explores the origin of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep's environmental desolation and asks: did it happen in the movie, too?

Imagine a war where no-one knows who actually won.. or lost.

Actually the owl is not the only fake animal in the film. The fake snake and the fake snake scale is a plot point.

I can tell that the soil is contaminated with something(most probably radioactive fallout). In second trailer you see K walking towards some tent. On a tent you see inscription "Целина"(it means Virgin Soil in Russian). So it's some kind of dirt renovation farm i guess. Like in a Chernobyl and Fukushima

World War Terminus happens before the events in the book and the film. Read the book and look at the way the people dress in the movie to protect themselves against toxic rain.

well if you go off of the movie Soldier with Kurt Russel being a spiritual sequel, there's alot of evidence there was a world war seeing as the flashbacks of his career have alot of combat in Europe, primarily Russia

I have read the book twice. I always just took it that the movie was reflecting the exact events that are in the book. There are things that are in the book that would be boring and detract from the movie. This is common. Books can go into details that would bore you on the big screen. Although there are differences, in my opinion the differences are not that "loosely" based, or detracted from the book. The characters are mostly the same. Even when a couple of names, and in the case of J.F. Sebastion, being the most different character from the book, you still know what character the movie version is based on. But, if you read the book, you will notice that Scott dropped subtle hints to the book in the movie, that you will only catch if you read the book. Like the billboard of the Asian woman taking a other hints. And, of course the off world colony, engineered vs. real animals, etc. These make no other sense without a nuclear war.

There are some shots of other animals too. A lama and buzzard are with handlers on the street scene before Zora's dressing room. Jus sayin...I have watched the film literally 100's of times.

You see an Ostrich in the animal market.

The whole idea of world war terminus as described and the scarcity of animals, brings into account the availability of food. Notice in Bladerunner as Rick Decard orders food he wants four but the chef offers him two. Was this to ensure enough food to go around? Still further in 2049 we see that Wallace farms are bringing protein in the form of worms to avert famine. Thanks for exploring the BR universe as it’s post apocalyptic circumstances surely raise many questions dealing with things barely or moderately addressed in the book/movie(s).

Even though it is not spoken in the movie, World War Terminus is actually mentioned on the scrolling intro text of movie (at least the final cut).

I just hope there will be mention in the new movie of Rachel throwing Deckard's prized, real goat off the roof.

Wow! Awesome vid! Always enjoy your stuff, your channel adds so much depth to topics for me. I love when a book connects hard with a movie, hope the war happened did happen. Also, I've heard before that Ridley Scott connected the Alien verse and Blade Runner verse via a note from Tyrell to Weyland that was included in the blu-ray edition of Prometheus, talking of their childhood together. So what if, not only did World War Terminus occur, but what if it explains the destruction at the ending alien: resurrection, when they make it back to earth? I know Scott wasn't involved with alien: resurrection, but what if someone saw the connection before he did and connected it? Not saying any franchise has to be connected to make it cooler, but was just wondering your thoughts and everyone else! Thanks and keep up the awesome work!

Zhora's snake is also a fake animal, but Deckard also talks to a maker of fake fish (he originally thought the scale was a fish scale)

The "Blade Runner" title is from a William S. Burroughs screenplay about (broadly) a healthcare crisis. The producers of the film settled with WSB apparently.

The only thing in the movie that comes directly from the book were the questions Deckard asks Rachel during the Voit-Komph test.

Tyrell corp was called the Rosen Corp. Pris was a exact duplicate of Rachel. Batty appears in the book but only towards the end. J.K. Sebastian had another name which I forget at the moment. J.K. wasn't a genetic engineer. He was just someone who worked for a robotic pet veterinarian who picked up defective robotic pets that needed repair. Rachel didn't know that she was a android (LIke in the movie) but she didn't have a big crises when she was told that she was. Deckard was married but his marriage was on the rocks and the only reason that he took the job was to earn a lot of money so that he could afford a real animal to impress his wife.

There was also this weird religion that involved a old man climbing a hill while others threw rocks at him.

Interesting universe but I also wondered about technological breakthroughs and how quickly they move with certain technologies to speed up the off-world colonization. Also noticed that there's not much digital technology but all analog technology. No smartphones, touchscreen computers or laptop computers. There's certain things missing in 2019 and 2049 but other technologies are added in on that universe. Two interesting films to speculate and analyze about its condition on what happened in the past to bring about a strange looking future.

Is it possible to share the images used for this video? Some are really cool to use as Wallpaper. Thanks.

A scenario like WWT is a VERY good reason to start an "Ark Project", to save the animal and planets genetic codes, and if possible the actual animals and plants.
