I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.
When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

I'd love to get the score for this. My wife has a nice soprano voice and I am learning the low whistle (and we are ancient - married 45 years). We sometimes sing and play together in the evenings. Well done Meav - I've heard a few other versions of this lovely and haunting verse set to music. Yours is the only one I have ever heard that does it justice. Thank you so much

How is this not more widely known?? Meav has got to be the best female vocal out there.

A good example of Meav's supremacy as a female vocalist. I wish more people knew about her and got to enjoy her music.

This is beautiful!! I love the words of this lovely song that Méav has written for her new solo cd "THE CALLING". Thank you, Méav for the beauty you share with your thoughts which you so wonderfully write  in your songs. "Glimmering Girl" is one of the most beautiful of all of your songs.

The lyrics are a famous piece of Irish poetry called the 'Song of Wandering Aengus' by William Butler Yeats. Yeats isn't my favorite poet, for sure, but this was always one of his that I liked best and this musical version is simply enchanting . . . very well done and so perfectly sung by our Celtic songbird . . . :D :)

Is this a traditional song or did Meav write it?
