Topolia Gorge, also known as Topoliano Gorge, can be found on the western side of the region of Chania, near the mountainous village Topolia. Due to its magical natural scenery, it has become a popular destination among hikers and nature enthusiasts.
The gorge is approximately 1.5 kilometer long and it takes 1 hour to hike through it. The route is not considered difficult. You will be able to reach the entrance of the gorge by car and then park your vehicle in order to continue on foot.
While hiking, you will have the opportunity to admire the gorge's steep cliffs, secluded caves, plane trees and lush vegetation and the river Tiflos. Birds and Cretan goats can also be spotted in this area. Places worth visiting in the gorge include the partially accessible cave of Agia Sofia and the chapel of Agia Sofia, which is located near the road. According to ancient folklore, this gorge and especially its caves have been linked to fairies and other mythological entities.
