In this video, we’re counting down the top 10 facts about the Italian Greyhound.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Companion Dogs
Height: 1 foot 1 inch to 1 foot 3 inches tall at the shoulder
Weight: 6 to 15 pounds
Life Expectancy: 14 to 15 years

Italian Greyhounds were bred to hunt and still have the hunting instinct. They'll chase anything that moves, including cars, so when you're outside keep them on leash or in a fenced area.

This breed is sensitive to drugs such as anesthetics of the barbiturate class and organophosphate insecticides. Make sure your veterinarian is aware of these sensitivities, and avoid using organophosphate products to treat your home and yard for fleas.

Italian Greyhound puppies are fearless and believe they can fly. Broken bones are common in pups between four and 12 months old, particularly the radius and ulna (the bones in the front legs).

Although they're clever, Italian Greyhounds have a short attention span and a "what's in it for me?" attitude toward training. Keep training sessions short and positive, using play, treats, and praise to motivate your Italian Greyhound to learn.

This breed can be extremely difficult to housetrain. Even if you follow a housetraining program religiously, your Italian Greyhound may never be totally trustworthy in the house. It helps to have a dog door, so your dog can come and go as he wishes. And if your dog gives you the signs that he needs to go outside, take him out that instant — they're not good at holding it.

Italian Greyhounds need lots of love and attention, and if they don't get it, they'll become shy or hyper.

We just lost our Italian greyhound at the end of March, she would have been 18 april 3rd. What a joy she brought to us and our grandkids. The best dog all around. Love and miss her.

I haven’t met any other breed of dog that will give you the same level of affection as they will. They want to be by your side the entire time you are home so keep that in mind. They are definitely a companion dogs and need your love as well. I would definitely say my dog is needy, meaning if I don’t show her enough attention, she will let me know, and wiggle her way into whatever I am doing.

I'm an obsessive Iggy - Lover and have researched this breed for 3 years. They're the most unique and special dogs. They're addictive! Once you go Iggy, you would never go back!

Cermets require many things to grow... you must keep your cermet at temperature BOILING, you must water your cermet with an watering can or let it drink water itself, your cermet will mostly run on chicken, and your cermet should always be N A S T Y.

Iggies LOVE to be warm. My iggy sleeps under the covers always and in the winter wears clothes because his hair is so thin!

They are the most beautiful and elegant little dogs. They seem to fragile given their stature, but are agile and fun !

One of these little guys, whom I affectionately call Dash, has just stolen my heart and I would have never thought!! I’m a giant breed type of girl so I never really thought about having one but Dash is the sweetest thing and I get all the snuggles and I love it...and I’m seriously considering adding one to our pack!

My dog "Flash" is extremely obedient and just about a perfect dog for all the reasons cited. Two corrections from this video -
1. Flash does need a lot of exercise, and I mean a lot of hard sprints day to day. He definitely lives up to his name.
2. These are not hunting dogs. Sure they're prey driven, but they have no fat or fur to protect them from branches and thorns. Any chill in the air and you can forget it too.

We leave him home alone with free reign of the house - no problems. In the rare circumstance we leave him for many hours and he really needs to go to the bathroom, he literally goes to the bathroom and poops in front of the toilet and pees on the toilet side. We never trained him to do that, but again, very rare.

I get a lot of compliments on my dog wherever I go. In fact, this one gentleman at a gas station offered me a large sum of money to take my dog. Thanks, but no thanks. No amount of money can separate us, Flash and I are attached at the hip. Actually, he is off collar off leash with no fence always. We leave him outside to sunbath for a couple of hours at a time, or until he's ready to come in. This takes commitment in training to get to this point.

Last thought, the best advice is the tone of voice. They are very sensitive dogs and get nervous if you object to something they do. You don't need to yell at the dog but rather just deepen your voice. It will go a long way during training or to show you really mean business at that moment.

These are such amazing dogs! I had 4, now have 2 and they are soooo very special! I've also had a lab, beagle, blood hound, a mutt & I've loved them all very much but my Iggy's are definitely something special! 🥰❤❤❤❤

I have a five-year-old Iggy. Super affectionate, super sweet, super intelligent. However, I don't recommend these dogs if all members of the household work fulltime and are not at home. They're not a breed who does well when alone for long periods of time - they can get really anxious, plus they're really hard to housetrain so you're more likely to come home to accidents if they're alone all day.
