The thing with this is, if they go under, yes you own the movies and the hardware but if you loose the hardware or hard drive you’ll have no recourse. No cloud source to re-download your movies, no way to export your files and play elsewhere.

I can't afford a $10-15K native 4k projector but I find value in that and wouldn't call it a rip-off, I think the kaleidascapes are rip off's cus I have a fair idea of what the hardware should cost and the delta between that and what they are charging. What I don't know is what their company operational and licensing costs are, which is I'm sure a decent chunk of the cost, maybe they can't sell it for less for other non profit motive based reasons, but somehow, I doubt it. It's almost to the point where a rich person won't buy something, or think it premium unless it hits a certain price poit, and that is their market so that is what they are aiming for, just need another company to come in and offer a similar service for the enthusiast. not even regular people, they will stick to discs and streaming, but we need a version of this for people who will spend $2000 on a sub woofer, $10, 000 on a projector and want something less clunky then disc, higher quality than streaming and doesn't have the time, interest, or know how to do it themselves. Nvidia, get on this, you have the capital to make it happen.

It is a high price to pay for the average consumer, who would love to access this type of premium service for a reasonable price.

Can it be done for a lower price...yes, absolutely! However, as you have clearly stated Shane:

1. Little to no competition in the market with this type of offering.
2. Do it yourself is very time consuming and therefore as much out of reach as the cost factor for most.

We (the average person) hope to have an offering like a NETFLIX, for blue ray quality release without compression and yes..May be a premium solution with Day/Date release as well. Is that too much to ask for..? Currently..yea, apparently it is. Sigh...Such is life.

For the average consumer, yes it is too expensive.

Assume much? I have Kaleidescape since their DVD version, I qlso have a stable 600 mbps downstream to download the movies I purchase from Kaleidescape, and even I stillthink it’s a ripoff. I now end up buying 5-10 UHD discs a month. Plop in the disc, and the picture quality in virtually all cases are identical (I use UB9000 as the UHD player). It’s easier for me to get my movies from Amazon and get them delivered within 24 hours. Kaleidescape didn’t give me better experience or making it “easier” for me to watch a movie.

why is there a huge difference in price between a 6tb strato and a 12tb strato? which drives do they use? do they make them themselves?

Shane, we share the same passion in our hobby. I’m a big fan listening to your contents. Specifically speaking, I used DVDFAB and have spent time to be able to rip over 300 blu rays and 4K blu rays on my hard drives and I play them thru my Oppo-205 as well. This beats having to spent the $8000 for sure. It’s a lot of time but I get a lot of satisfaction from all that time and work. Keep doing what you’re doing brother.

The limit of devices you can download too. Can’t lend the movie to a friend. Limited space for keeping movies etc.

hi Shane been watching your videos for quite a while now love your channel
my question was that on the keleidescape what are the chances of losing your movies if the internal hard drive
of the kaleidescape and are you able to get the movies back if this happened ?

I'm not sure I understand the point of the Kaleidescape for customers outside the US, UK and Canada, the only three countries where the store is available

would love to see an update on this topic in 2022. 4k laser projectors and 4k oled tv are common place. Streaming services offer many 4k dolby atmos products. So was it worth it?

I can't believe you're still trying to justify the price of it. Just because they need to get the licence doesn't justify the price because you still have to buy the movies.

I'm using a Zotac Zbox with Libreelrc aka kodi with an external HDD with my BluRays and DVDs ripped onto it for my media player which does the same thing for a lot less.

IT IS a rip off. If I was a billionaire I wouldn't buy it.

I kinda don't understand why you seem so sensitive about this but the bottom line is in a few years the price will drop as competitors come into play! I'm old enough to remember when VHS players were 5 grand ! Lol! But you know what, that didnt last long at all! I think people see it as a RIP off because its basically "software" and of course a huge hard drive! But it's not like thousands of man hours of men sweating and hand building anything lol! Its only expensive because some people are actually buying it at this price. Personally I dont think this company is going to be successful and it wouldnt surprise me if the company went into this knowing that! Sometimes businesses are only created to get investors interested so the entrepreneur can make a qwick buck and walk away! It's called business and it's done on a daily business! Most company's start out knowing they wont show a profit for two years and have the owners pre determined salary built in to the initial business loan or investment from private parties! So even if the business fails the owners are still comfortably paid ! Sure its not "ethical" but unfortunately it is legal and done daily!

I think the better question would be is Kaleidascape practical. It's certainly not a ripoff as the costs are fully disclosed up front and people can decide whether or not they want to pay. I disagree with your assertion that those who balk at the cost can't afford the product. I could easily afford Kaleidascape but I'll never own it because they haven't offered a price point I feel comfortable with for what is being delivered.
