Interesting to see Sokolov in less than ideal circumstances: weird aquarium-like hall, paparazzi, garish lighting, stunted acoustics, out-of-tune piano... and yet as soon as he sits down, interiorizes, commits himself to it, starts to play: everything is transformed, nothing is merely of this earth anymore... the sublime made palpable for two minutes, once again.

For all its admirable pianism this trill-obsessed rendition of Chopin’s mazurka op. 68 no. 2 misses the mark, in my opinion. This hardly feels like a “lively triple-meter polish dance” to my ears and more like a beautiful walk in the park. But the trills, and Sokolov’s general control, are truly impressive.

In my opinion, that’s the spirit!
