Mixed voice vs Belting - what's the difference? #shorts

People often ask me: what's the difference between mixed voice and belting?

The answer is: this is not the right question to ask! it's not a tradeoff between one or the other.

In order to achieve a healthy high belt, you NEED to be using mixed voice, otherwise it's not a belt, it's just a yell.

Belting is holding on longer to a wider vowel while still maintaining a head voice engagement and cry tone, while still keeping mixed voice engagement. It is a tool to sound fuller, but it's not a means to an end

Let me know in the comments if this is helpful!

Thanks. I often hear some people say that, "if it's not chest voice, it's not your real voice". Thanks for giving light on it. I only wonder how to respond to such conservatives

In one of your comments, you say that you bring head voice down to all the way to C4
I can produce pretty "thick" tones now in my head voice and many people have mistaken it for a belt
I do struggle with connecting the registers though, and my lower head voice is a bit weak for singing
What would you say that I should do?

I also have problems with OO and EE vowels
It's a bit confusing because I hear all these singers seemingly at least sing OO's and EE's very powerfully like Bruce Dickinson and Dio, yet it sounds way too heady when I go for those vowels.
I also don't really get how Bruce produces a tone with such a "pushy" feeling
On his OO's and EE's, just wow how much he can compress
This also might be psychological but even on wider and taller vowels, I sort of feel like it's still a bit too thin.

I wish to learn music from a vocalist like you. Please let me know if you provide online sessions too. If yes, let me know how to reach you out?

Hey man I have a question, I've been mainly interested in developing my chest voice up to C5 that's always been my main goal and I'm pretty close - right now I'm able to sing phrases in B4 as well as sustain them, just in a thinner way as it usually starts.

I'll just call it chest voice, because to me it is chest voice in this range - just thinned out where it feels like it's in the head but it's still chest. Basically as phil moufarrege describes it.

My question is, did you develop your chest range to a certain point before working on mixed voice? as you may have heard, there are teachers like phil moufarrege and ken tamplin that say that you should mainly focus on developing chest voice first or you could atrophy your voice - since it all starts with chest and working too much head can be a set back.

I haven't been too interested in higher mixes, but if it facilitates my progress than I think now it's a good time to start. And it would be nice to have an alternative to chest up high.

What's your highest chest note? or do you drag your head voice down to the B4 / C5 area and make it sound beefy through resonance etc?.

Hey Leo, first off, great videos. They make the most sense to me compared any other video explaining the topics you do, so I want to thank you for that.

Could you do a short on the high part of A Tout le Monde (around 2:35 on the studio recording) and then explain what you’re doing to sing these notes? Like what techniques used and what not for this, as well as similar vocal lines?

After singing 2 song in mix voice I feel tension in my throat, and though I take care not to push and sing too loud. Is the problem coming from the compression ? Or I don’t know I try not to compress too much. Do I have to push more on my support ?
