CURBLESS SHOWER TRANSITION --- HOW TO TAPER TILE TO DRAIN

Curbless tiled showers are becoming more and more popular not only because of the minimalist design look but also because more and more of our population is choosing to age at home. Curbless entry showers allow people to use walking assist devices or wheelchairs to easily enter the shower. They also prevent tripping over a shower curb or dam. There are two ways to install a linear drain for a curbless shower...for the slope to from side to side or from front to back. More often than not, we are choosing to do from side to side because usually the shower head is on the side wall, not the back wall. With the person using the shower standing at the shower head, it is much more comfortable to stand on the slope of the pan going towards the wall that you are facing, rather than standing on a side slope going the other direction. To make this happen, there needs to be a transition from the bathroom floor tile to the shower floor tile and the cuts will need to be tapered under the schluter trim. In this video, we use a Schluter Systems Kerdi Line linear drain and Hydro Ban Sheet Membrane for waterproofing over a deck mud (dry pack) base.

That is a step down shower. Even that lip edge is considered a curb to most people. Zero transition showers are my favorite. Beautiful work. Love your channel.

This is great, thanks. Maybe you can answer. If my transition gap is smaller than this one, like less than .25 inch and I am using one type of small matted tile on the entire floor + shower, can I just fill the edge with extra thin set to buffer the gap and run the sheet over the edge and let it turn down into the shower?

PB&C. That’s how we did it. Raised my kids with it too. Thanks for the great tiling help.

Coach, I love your attention to detail. Your analogy to dentistry, or lets say, microsurgery, is right on. It’s ALWAYS the little things that make the big difference.

Beautiful shower... and that transition detail is awesome... that kind of stuff makes it.... and yes, peanut butter on celery.

I liked learning your reasoning for putting the drain on that side.

Any tracks!! Celery, peanut butter and raisins marching down the peanut butter. Great healthy snack!

Blanke makes a stainless steel trim piece just for such an application incorporating the top edge.No tapered tiling required . All stainless.
Really sharp looking, too.

thank you for putting out these videos ive been watching nonstop for the last month or two trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible
i finally landed a gig at a bathroom remodeling company as a helper and ive been extremely nervous due to my inexperience.

i worked at home depot for years now in the flooring department so i know what the materials are and why you would choose one product over another but ive never actually got my hands dirty and done the work itself

just wanted to thank you for these videos it really helps people like me looking to get into the trade

also when i was a kid i liked peanut butter in my celery but now that im 25 i have the power to not eat celery and order pizza instead

If you want to check for square on those little tapered tiles on the transition you could use a combination square. It might go by another name where you're at, but it's basically a ruler that clamps into a body which forms a 90 degree angle between the body and ruler. (Most have a little level bubble and also a part on the body that can do a 45 degree angle for miters as well). You could set the depth of the ruler to be just level with the sloped floor of the shower, and register the body of the square against the bathroom floor.

Love the videos man. I'm a plumber and where I'm at it's pretty typical for plumbers to install the shower pan liner at the same time as we install the shower drain. Thanks to you and your team I've learned lots of ways to do better installations, and hopefully lead to better long term performance for our customers. Thank you!

Bro, you are a life saver my customers weren’t sure when I did their curbless shower this way and they watched this and said “ I guess we should just not question you anymore” thanks man! Love your work and your content

Peanut butter all day! Unbelievable you can dip from a bucket without getting your sleeve all tagged. My arms need a good scrapping when I’m done for the day and that stuff burns that sensitive skin. Very clean. We have installed this exact tile many times with the curb less trans. Love the work you do. Learning more each day. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.

Really enjoy your videos. I've watched a lot of stuff on You Tube but recognized right away that you have better instruction than almost everybody out there. Best is that you don't look down on guys with less experience and you promote the trades.
I am doing a shower in my house. This is my first site built pan and first time using Pro-Shield.
Thanks for all your help. I will try to post pics later.
BTW - grew up on peanut butter on celery but do not mind cream cheese but PB is healthier.

I build these dimensions of shower area with the drain in the middle. This cuts back the slope height in half, is practical in usage and looks awesome.

With big tiles: if u take a drain thats 6 inches smaller than width shower u can even make a really nice looking envelope cut.
