I think this story takes place after the movie ended.
After the story ended, Thomas O'Malley became stepfather to the three kittens and Scat Cat and his gang of alley cats became part of the group. All that money they inherited was regenerated by the performances of Scat Cat and his gang of alley cats. I like to believe that Thomas O'Malley got a new gig as a magician performing acts in which he made Duchess disappear, and that Duchess has said "I LOVE getting made disappear."

When Marie is older, she talks about why it was wrong to sneak out, and Duchess has said "Well, your stepfather is a magician and has performed acts in which he made me disappear, and I LOVE getting made disappear. Now the audience never sees me reappear, and fans who have seen the show with this act will not see it again because it's the same thing every time. What if the parlor was the venue of your stepfather's magic show with the aforementioned act? You'd have interfered with the show if you opened the part of the box where I am hidden trying to find where I really went, and if you sat with the rest of the audience, the act of making me disappear would have left you mentally scarred for a long time!"
