One Piece is just incredibly charming. The world, the characters, the humor, the emotions. It just makes me feel good when I read it.

For fans of Treasure Island, I highly recommend the TV show Black Sails. It takes place 20 years before the events of Treasure Island and it’s about the complex relationship between Captain Flint and Long John Silver. It does a good job at blending the harsh reality of piracy and the pirate mythology. The show has a lot of real life pirates as well, such as Calico Jack, Anne Bonny, Charles Vane, and Blackbeard.

As a One Piece fan I'm always looking for Pirate Books to read. So this was much needed. Thank you.

Merphy: I'm disappointed that one of the big mysteries was spoiled to me
Also Merphy: * proceeds to spoil the mystery rather than warn about the title of the next book *

I really need to get back to reading One Piece. I adore Red Seas Under Red Skies, it might be my favourite in the series.

Other pirate recommendations:

Captain Blood by Rafael Sabatini. It's an older work, but quite a classic in the way Treasure Island is.

Captain in Callico by George MacDonald Frasier. Much like Crichton's Pirate Latitudes, this one was published after the author's death.

Then there's the TV Show Black Sails which beautifully blends historical events and figures with the fictional world of Treasure Island. Sort of a prequel to Treasure Island, it focuses on Captain James Flint in his quest to acquire a great treasure in order to secure Nassau's freedom from Europe. We also see the rise of a lowly seaman named John Silver as he rises to become a rival of Flint's.
The show is gritty and doesn't hold back. The first season especially falls into the "sex and sadism" trap, but once the show gets its footing, it is wonderful.

Going to add my voice to the people recommending the TV show Black Sails. It is a sort of prequel to Treasure Island that incorporates elements of real world history into the narrative. The series is so interesting and complex, with great performances across the board (though special mention goes to Toby Stephens who brilliantly plays Captain Flint). If you struggle with the first season, try to push through, as the writing improves monumentally as it goes on.

I had only read perter pan and one piece, but have always wanted to read more pirate books. A huge thank you for this recommendation

First: Peter and the Starcatchers is NOT a darker side of Peter Pan. It's so funny I practically peed myself laughing. Dave Barry is a comedy genius. But you should definitely read it; best Peter Pan retelling I have ever seen.

Second: The True Confession of Charlotte Doyle by Avi is a unspoken masterpiece. If you are down for a female protagonist who goes from timid young lady to badass sailor when she finds herself wrapped up in a high seas adventure then look no further. It's. So. Good.

A really good Middle Grade pirate book is called "Sea of Kings" by Melissa Hope. I just finished reading it and I love it! I'm excited to read it to my kids when they get a bit older!
