The riff at the very beginning is the SNCF jingle, the french national train company jingle; Thing is David fell in love with the jingle because he heard it like only a few times.
French people, who hear it so often, are actually totally completely sick of it. They can't take it anymore. It's always that jingle that's gonna tell you "your train is goign to be 2hrs late" every fucking day. Drives you crazy nuts !
Spend some time in France, traveling by train. You'll feel what I mean.

love this song, can't understand why people haven't loved his last couple of albums.. on an island was a floyd minus waters island and this was a great album.. so glad I got to see him at the royal albert hall.. the blue live was so good
